This is my first post in this forum ever so if I´ve posted in the wrong section, sorry. So here is my problem. I am building a home server/storage computer which will be placed in our closet. Its a small area so I will have to choose parts that dont generate so much heat but at the same time are good at crunching work from my Boinc manager. I have three possible solutions. Which one do yu think I should go with? Only talking about cpu/gpu right now. Storage disks are SSD;s and the case is an Antec P182 with very good airflow. - Intel i3 (Haswell) 35w at 3,0 Ghz and a AMD Radeon 5450 GoGreen gpu - Intel i5 (Haswell) 35w at 2,9 Ghz and the built in Intel HD 4600 - Intel i3 (Haswell) 35w at 3,0 Ghz and an old GeForce GTX 460 Which option of the three above is the best solution for me? Remember, the system must generate as little heat as possible. |

I have just purchased an i5 (Haswell) - the i5-4570 CPU @ 3.20GHz [Family 6 Model 60 Stepping 3] model. That was in a full retail factory build - just a consumer item (I deliberately wanted a factory OEM Windows installation, for other testing). I find that for the HD 4600 to work efficiently, I have to limit CPU usage to 3 out of four cores. In that mode (3 CPU tasks plus one Intel GPU task), the entire system unit is drawing 88W from the wall. There are a limited number of projects with Intel GPU applications as yet, but the two I've tried so far worked flawlessly at the first attempt. |
