I downloaded the stable version of boinc this afternoon and attempted to follow the instructions for building.

First, I get errors from _autosetup:
source _autosetup
: Command not found.
: Command not found.
: Command not found.
if: Expression Syntax.

Even if this ran, there is no "configure" file to configure the makefile anyway. I looked in the online cvs repository and there's not one there either.

So can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

This is not a very good first impression of boinc. How do the supporters of boinc expect people to build clients if these kinds of simple problems exist? There are broken links in the web pages, out of date documentation (which is almost as bad as no documentation). What do the maintainers of boinc plan to do with boinc in the future as far as support goes?

Boinc is open source volunteer system. Since you didn't say what kind of system you have and I don't recognize the commands your using, but I'm guessing it's Linux. It would have been nice to mention what OS and distro your using.
Anyway, here is the link to the Seti Unix/Linux help Board where you're more likely to find knowledgeable people to assist you. Please give full details about your system when requesting help.

Boinc V 7.4.36
Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB NVidia 470
