Message 50018 - Posted: 28 Jul 2013, 22:01:28 UTC - in response to Message 50017.

Will Boinc update itself to newer versions when they are available?

I don't think so. Version 7.2.8 is available in the Google Play Store, if your BOINC is still 7.2.7, it doesn't update itself.
And will the project list update itself as more projects becomes availabe?

Yes, that one will update itself.

I saw you mentioned The skynet pogs as an arm project but it wasn't in the projects list.

That's because 7.2.7 was built before SkynetPOGs was added.

By the way, there's also an Android FAQ that is updated quite regularly.

Using version 7.2.27 obtained via BOINC website.

Device is ICOU8GT (quad core)

Only 2 cores show in the app control "Used CPU cores" (CPU limit is 100% as are pretty much all other controls).

You have a problem.

After current tasks are complete it will be reverted to NativeBOINC that has been running all 4 cores successfully for about 8 weeks. (see http://nativeboinc.org/site/detail_host/61773)

Ooops!

Uninstalled BOINC 7.2.27 and the tab rebooted back to default Android OS (Chinese language) deleting all installed apps/settings.

Back to the drawing board chaps.

That would be 7.2.7 then, and isn't the latest available. A little attention to details like that would be nice.

Only 2 cores show in the app control "Used CPU cores" (CPU limit is 100% as are pretty much all other controls).

And what does Event Log say? CPU limit is the throttling function, not the amount of CPUs you set, just as in regular BOINC (Limit the CPU time BOINC uses for computation). (You can have the phone email the Event Log to you).
Which project(s) did you add?

Uninstalled BOINC 7.2.27 and the tab rebooted back to default Android OS (Chinese language) deleting all installed apps/settings.

It certainly doesn't revert back to English on my phone, and I have removed it 4 times already.

It appears that the "CPU Limit" option has disappeared in my settings, but I don't see anything in the change log in Google Play about that setting going away. Was the CPU Limit removed or am I missing something? I do still see the "Pause at CPU usage above" setting.

Does BOINC for Android run in the background continually or only if the user who installed it is logged in?

I would download it but I personally hardly ever use my Android. My roomie uses it quite a bit, however and I have him registered as another user on the device.

If BOINC runs regardless then I will attach to a project, if not then for me it's really wasted effort.

It runs continually in the background, but will only allow the project science apps to do their stuff when the battery charger is charging the battery. The battery needs to be at 90% full or better, before crunching starts. You can override this, but that's not recommended.

As for multi-user accounts, do you have some device then with Android 4.2 or better installed, and did you add another user? For if you didn't, you are the only user on your device.

Is there any chance that the BM for android can show version number where the little boinc icon are besides BOINC?

¤BOINC 7.2.9 or something...

From Bikeman (Heinz-Bernd Eggenstein):
This version of BOINC on Android can not use space on an SD card.

My understanding is that Android has some restrictions on what an application can put on an SD card, especially if you want to put executable files there. There seem to be ways to get around some of those limitations, e.g. NativeBOINC uses kind of a "hack" (in the words of the author of Native BOINC) to run BOINC almost entirely off an SD card, but I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with this solution. But the BOINC team is looking into this.

Seems to be a high security risk to put an exe on a removable memory.

Is there anyone why tried to make a remote connection to the client?
In other words a RPC call.
And succeeded.

Hi everybody!
I have a problem - cannot find where to change may device name. It gives me localhost in project stats, but previously I had NativeBOINC running with personalized name on the same device. Could you give me some idea?

I have 2 Sony Ericsson android phones.

I've tested them on several projects.
Works pretty ok.

But there is a problem.

They are the same phone when I look at www for the projects computor status.
When I update the first it shows as the second phone and vice versa.

The 2 phones at Einstein and SETI Beta

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/hosts_user.php
http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/hosts_user.php?userid=14842

Eric at Seti Beta suggested I inform BoincManager Dev people about this.
So here it is.

I hope someone here can make sence to this.

And computor id is the same on both phones.

This is a known issue, all showing as 'localhost'. Read in the dev log that a future release will pick up the MAC code and show that on the website, which is unique for each device.

So you are going to leak personally identifying information, the MAC address, and display that to the world?

"Me"? Talk to Dr.A.

FAIK, you make the choice to show device detail to the world, you make the choice to identify with geo-location information [yes I saw that proposition too] and what not. In the good old days over at WCG you could 'name' your devices at the website so it only is of value in discussing the same host, which is about the limit, before BOINC that is. Now by default it shows the network identifiable name, which would be 'leaking' too. Then there are BOINCers who put their real name as member name instead of an alias and all that information put together and some searching on the intertubes, coupling with various social networks, and we know pretty exact where you are with your Galaxy SIV. With Android it's not possible, but I've had for years the network info suppress active in cc_config. My devices show with the project assigned device ID, so a different number for each project it's contributing to, which means nothing to nobody by the project who uses it to couple results to devices.

Anyway, I said I saw this at the dev log, and WCG not allowing access to device info, they might not object since it does not go anywhere else, but...

Any chance boinc can sence there already is 1 device connected and then ask a simple question if this is device x+1 and then give it a unique device number during the install.

That's already done... each computer that joins a project recieves an unique id on that particular project (different on each project)
