Hello Everyone,

a long time ago (2004) I used Seti@Home and since I have a new PC, I decided to get back into it. I chose three products and changed the settings so the Boinc could have its way with my 4 CPU and 700-some CUDA cores. And nothing happened!

So I looked at the Boinc manager and saw there was A LOT of downloading to be done. Shouldn't be a problem, because I have a dedicated fiber optic connection. Why, then, can Boinc only download the project files one or two at a time and only at around 0.4 to 5 kbps?

I checked my firewall settings and made sure Boinc had full access. The network usage is set to 0 and 0 in Boinc (no limit).

Did I miss a setting or make some other beginner's mistake?

Thanks for your help!

What projects did you attach to? What cache settings did you use?

Boinc startup messages from the event log are always useful too.

Right now I'm on SETI@home, climateprediction.net, LHC@home, and Asteroids@home. I'm letting Boinc use 30 GB on an SSD and 75% of the page file. I'm also letting it use 4 GB RAM. I set the min work buffer to 1 day plus 10 days.

My event log is pretty long already, but I saw these startup messages:

3/1/2013 9:18:29 PM | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
3/1/2013 9:18:31 PM | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

I guess that might explain it for SETI@home. I also only see the transfers for SETI--I can't see any others. After hearing my cooling rev up I saw Asteroids was running strong.

Why can't I see the transfers for the other projects then?

Ahh I see it now. LHC and climateprediction have no new tasks for Asteroids download so quickly, they're out of the transfers tab before I know it. Which leaves two questions:

1) Why are the transfers from SETI so slow?

2) How come I can't get new tasks from climateprediction? There's no post on the homepage regarding a downtime or project outage...

1) There is only a 100 Mbits/sec link for downloads/uploads/scheduler use at Seti, the link is almost always has well over 100 Mbits/sec of downloads on it, probably up to 500 Mbits/sec when Short AR Multibeam work is in the majority,
this won't improve until a) Setiathome v7 is released, b) the project gets enough donations to cover their server needs, and then cover the probably $100K cost of putting a new fiber link in, c) or they move their servers off the hill.

2) Look at CPDN's server status page, there are no Wu's ready to send:

Wow thanks Claggy! That explains everything!

Slowly I'm getting back into the swing of things :)
