Message 47613 - Posted: 3 Feb 2013, 1:25:42 UTC

I've been running BOINC for years. I haven't had a new windows installation since 09. Recently I noticed my screen saver was telling me that there were no active projects. So I opened my manager and saw there was nothing listed.

When I go to tools and try to add a project, nothing happens. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the client and it hasn't fixed the problem.

Any ideas?

Not sure what happened or what else to do.

Thanks in advance.

version 7.0.28
It says: "Connecting to localhost" at the bottom of the client. That message does not change. There are no notices in the notice tab. Nothing is showing in projects, tasks, transfers or stats.

I doubt my PC specs are the problem here.

Have you tried restarting the PC? Is the client even running? Is the client crashing on start? What does stdoutdae.txt say?

Have a read of When requesting and giving help on these forums... , especially the 1st paragraph, the 1st and 2nd paragraph under General, and the 1st and 2nd paragraph under Windows.

Heh, yes I've restarted the PC. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled the client.

I don't even have a stdoutdae.txt file in my BOINC dir.

I don't even have a stdoutdae.txt file in my BOINC dir.

The stdoutdae.txt is in the Boinc Data directory, not the Boinc program files directory,

Is that it? nothing else? What's in the stdoutdae.old?

Do you still have a client_state.xml, an account_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml, an global_prefs.xml and a master_setiathome.berkeley.edu.xml?

You know that with cricket, there's tea [and crumpets] involved ;>)

But, your first log comes across as if most all log flags, including some that are default on have bee switched off... nothing there to learn anything from [at least for me]. The manual to setting them: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Cc_config.xml

Nothing in the data dir and the client not connecting... time to change balls and ascertain that boinc.exe is running either as a user process or a service/daemon.

Yes, so you did. But why all?
Please read the descriptions of the log flags, before enabling them, and else just ask which ones you need. None of us ever needs ALL of them.

And having <options/> set like that will spark the unparsed_xml flag.
If you must set <options/> do it like <options></options>, with nothing in between the flags.

You only need task, file_xfer, sched_ops (these three are always on by default, so leave them on).
Separately, you put on cpu_sched, cpu_sched_debug, work_fetch_debug, network_status_debug, file_xfer_debug.

So:
<cc_config>
<log_flags>
<cpu_sched>1</cpu_sched>
<cpu_sched_debug>1</cpu_sched_debug>
<file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>
<work_fetch_debug>1</work_fetch_debug>
</log_flags>
<options>
<max_stdout_file_size>20119200</max_stdout_file_size>
</options>
</cc_config>

I set the stdoutdae.txt file size to ~18MB here, to make sure that when you do go capture stuff and walk away, that when you return to the computer, you still have a good chance of it being in the log file instead of being overwritten. The maximum default log size is 2MB, which will be overwritten in no time with a couple of log flags on.

Oh, and it's also useful to post the result after about 5 minutes of logging. Please do not log for 5 hours and post all of that. That is information overkill and will result in me removing that post.

I am having this same issue.

My thread is pretty much the same problem except I am using windows 7. Did anyone get a fix for this?

It has to be an issue with boinc 7 because 6 and 5 work fine.

Why all? Because no one said specifically what to set. That's why all.

I change the cc_config to the flag you suggested and there's nothing in my stdoutdae still.

I change the cc_config to the flag you suggested and there's nothing in my stdoutdae still.

We assume you either restarted the client or [To test], went to the BM activity menu and did the "read config file" which should produce event log window entries of this type:

2/11/2013 10:20:39 AM |  | Re-reading cc_config.xml
2/11/2013 10:20:39 AM |  | Not using a proxy
2/11/2013 10:20:39 AM |  | Config: use all coprocessors
2/11/2013 10:20:39 AM |  | Config: don't compute while prio_uninstall.exe is running
2/11/2013 10:20:39 AM |  | log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task, checkpoint_debug, cpu_sched, dcf_debug
2/11/2013 10:20:39 AM |  | log flags: sched_op_debug

If there are not, the file you're editing is very likely in the wrong place. It has to be in the BOINC data_dir, path printed in event log view at start of client. Does the event log view have entries and does it say the right bottom of manager that the localhost connect has been established are such questions that arise.
