It depends on your OS, really.

In Windows, it's an option in the installer, third screen in click Advanced, then check the Protected Application Execution option.

In Mac OSX, first install as normal then use the Make_BOINC_Service.sh script to make it a service.

In Linux, install the version from repositories. See install BOINC as a package how to do that on the most used distros.

Think in the Process tab, you first have to select the "show processing from all users" before you can do anything in the services view of Task Manager [which is where I stop/start/restart services]. Services.msc I only use if I want to edit settings.

To actually get to the PAE option and have BOINC install as service, on Windows you've got to uninstall BOINC first, else you only get the repair or remove/uninstall options.

Don't think you can do that on Windows, just Linux.

You can, you just can't use any GPUs in service mode.

You can use GPUs in service mode under Windows XP, up to and including BOINC v6.12.34

But you can't use GPUs in service mode under Vista or Windows 7, whichever version of BOINC you choose.

Have you done anything? If you don't describe what you have and have not done, we will be none the wiser to what you're done or not done.

To install as service/pae on Windows, it of course presumes the right to execute at administrator level. In File Explorer, right click on the installer package and choose "Run as Administrator". If any Joe Blow would be able to run the BOINC installer and have it create the BOINC user accounts, I'd not consider that as a , how shall we call that, a correct proceeding.
