I think SETI must be offsetting their new co-lo costs by sub-letting their old closet to other BOINC projects.

SIMAP's download, upload and dropped connection rates this morning have been as bad as SETI's ever were. :-D

And here I thought that with the move to the colo, this wasn't necessary any more. That they'd have that much power and overhead available to them that they could do the backup while the project was running, just as Einstein does. Oh well... ;-)

I thought the point of the weekly outages was that they can't do an effective backup of the database while it's in flux. It must have I/O stopped to get it done.

Anyway, they probably had some extra maintenance stuff to do in the wake of the move.

Recently, just before the move anyway, they have not stopped the upload and download servers, just the website seems to be off.

The upload and download servers don't need database access. That's done by the scheduler and reporting process respectively.

Uploading no, that is merely saving data from your hard drive to a hard drive on the server.

Downloading however needs scheduler access, which does need database access, as these tasks that you download need to get registered against your computer ID. Without scheduler no downloads.

Sure, it needs a scheduler contact to get the work allocated in the first place, but post-allocation, the download is free-standing and can continue after the scheduler and database are disabled.

With the network access at the old server closet, and before we were told about RFC1323, downloads - especially 8MB Astropulse downloads - could keep freewheeling for literally hours after the supply faucet was turned off. That may be what gave the impression that workflow was continuous over the last few maintenance outages.

Talking of Cricket graphs, the new one covering the colo has been showing 250mb/s the last couple of days. I remember when we were struggling to get 50mb/s, and we thought it was a miracle when we finally got 100mb/s. Ain't technology marvelous!

And they are still carping that it isn't enough work. 5X more and it isn't enough. Maybe the only way to shut up the carping is to get to a point they announce everyone will have to wait a month for the shipment of drives from Arecibo. Then maybe ...

Some of them would shut up if one of the project guys would post to the effect of "We know that sometimes there isn't enough work to send out to everybody all the time. Here's why, and here's what we plan to do about it." (Even if "what we plan to do about it" turns out to be "nothing.")

p.s. how many moaners have a green star?

Why ask? You want to give them a different colour star? (blue) ;-)
and P.S: How do you know all of them are men?

The color of the star doesn't matter. His point is that the majority of them don't have one. But he is making a pretty big generalization about all of this.
