Message 46255 - Posted: 13 Nov 2012, 5:11:53 UTC

Hi

I upgraded to 7.0.28(x64) and now there is never a WU in waiting. When a WU completes the scheduler starts trying to get a new one. During this time at least 1 CPU and / or the GPU are idle. That was not the behavior of the previous scheduler 6?. I assume that is not the way it is designed to work.

What might i try to remedy this situation.

thank you

Sb

Boinc 7 has a new rewritten scheduler, from the Boincfaq entry for Boinc 7:

The CPU and GPU schedulers have been rewritten from the ground up, as is the new work fetch module. This means that work fetch will happen completely different from how you're used to it in BOINC 6. Where BOINC 6 would for instance report work and immediately ask a new task, BOINC 7.0 will try to store a couple of "ready to report" results, report them and immediately request work only when BOINC is under the value set by the Minimum work buffer.

This means that when you have left your old BOINC 6 values for "Connect to" + "Additional work" at, example given 0.1 and 1.0, that BOINC 7.0 will ask for 1.1 days worth of work and ONLY renew this cache when it's fallen under the 0.1 days worth of work limit.

Which means that it can happen that your BOINC runs empty, because 7.0 won't request new work before it has dropped below the 'minimum work' setting and will only ask for work up to the 'and additional' setting --and that only from the project that has the highest priority (worst REC to resource share ratio). Only if that project doesn't have work it will ask other projects in order of priority.

This is easily fixed though, by turning the values around. Where the old values were 0.1 + 1.0, you now go for Minimum work buffer 1.0 + Maximum additional work buffer 0.1

Hi

thank you

so would setting </rec> to 0 do what setting ltd to 0 did ?
must </rec_time> also be set to 0

the scheduler is pounding on projects with no work available with an idle CPU although i am sure i need to give it some time to see if the change of connect to from very short to 1 day has an effect.

currently have 3 cold CPU, 3 active downloads the test4theory is ginormous and will take another 3-4 hours to download

Hi

the situation is no better
currently the GPU is not working but searching for a WU only 3 projects send work to my ATI card world community grid (all fail), Moo! Wrapper (works fine), Collatz Conjecture (works fine)
the behavior as i see it a GPU unit runs, finishes, than the scheduler tries to get another one. So the GPU is not being used during that time.

just checked and from completion of unit to finished download was 169 seconds so this time at least 169 seconds idle
just checked and from completion of unit to finished download was 142 seconds so this time at least 142 seconds idle

as i was composing this the cpu only had 5 units to work on. It is now full but no extra units are waiting to run. and a unit finished was uploaded and the scheduler is now searching for a WU with one instance of the CPU idle. At this time i have one unit in panic mode but this is same the behavior i see even when all are in normal running

just checked and from completion of unit to finished download was 82 seconds so this time at least 82 seconds idle

an additional situation has now arisen
i have a WU waiting to run but only 7 cores being utilized ( this may be due to the WU in panic mode)

and now 6 running 1 waiting and not trying to get more so 2 cpu idle

I am attached to 94 projects about 20 of them are suspended or otherwise non functional.

thease are the settings i have at BAM

just checked and from completion of unit to finished download was 485 seconds so this time at least 485 seconds idle

and now down to 5 CPU running 1 waiting to start 3 idle CPU

and it just keeps getting more interesting
suspended the unit in panic mode and the unit waiting to start started on all 8
should a project be able to do that?

Well, at least:
11/15/2012 8:53:52 AM | | ATI GPU 0: ATI Radeon HD 5x00 series (Redwood) (CAL version 1.4.556, 1024MB, 992MB available, 880 GFLOPS peak)

CAL version 1.4.556 is Catalysts 10.3, which is quite old.
It's even too old for OpenCL 1.1 compliancy, as that requires at least 10.7 (1.4.737). Your GPU is an OpenCL 1.1 GPU.

Everything is yelling at you that it needs OpenCL capability, but your GPU does not support it. It's because BOINC didn't find any OpenCL capable GPU:
11/15/2012 8:53:52 AM | | App version needs OpenCL but GPU doesn't support it

And that's back to a problem with the drivers.

Try to install a bit more up-to-date ones, first. No need to try the latest, but something more up-to-date than 10.3, please. See Previous Catalystâ„¢ Display Drivers for Windows Vista/7 (64 bit) for a list of drivers.

I'll leave you back in the very capable hands of Claggy. I was just posting what I saw.

i have a WU waiting to run but only 7 cores being utilized ( this may be due to the WU in panic mode)

and now 6 running 1 waiting and not trying to get more so 2 cpu idle

I am attached to 94 projects about 20 of them are suspended or otherwise non functional.

thease are the settings i have at BAM

Connect to network about every
2 days
Maintain enough work for an additional
0.1 days

You're using Local Preferences from Boinc Manager, these overide Web Preferences, go into Boinc Manager, and Tools, computing preferences and press Clear, then you'll revert back to using preferences from BAM.

Hi

I got bam to send preferences to the computer but i am also attached to non bam projects and they override the bam settings.

i thought that was fixed years ago and possibly the fix was the local override which i have reconfigured. now must let things clear to see what it is doing

sorry for being a bit dense i went to set and forget about 6 years ago. I am now more engaged again but much has changed in the intervening years.
