Howdy.

I've run Seta@Home for years even before there was a BOINC. Over the past couple of years I have noticed that BOINC uses more and more of my PC's memory sometimes causing it to crawl. Some days it gets so bad I I have to shut down BOINC entirely.

I don't do anything fancy. I installed the software and let it run. I have two projects: Seti and Einstein.

My preferences (at least those affecting memory use) are:

Tasks Checkpoint...60 seconds
Use at most 25.00% of page file
Memory usage:
Use at most 25% when computer in use
Use at most 40% when computer is idle

Processor usage:

Computing allowed while computer is in use
Use at most 20.00% of CPU time

What else is important here? Changing memory use via preferences seems to make little difference.

For instance, right now, there are two instances or einsteinbinary_BRP4_1.11_windows_intelx86_BRP4SSe.exe *32 in the task manager using 207,792K & 207,764K of RAM. CPU usage switches between 00 to 11 or as high as 15 every couple of seconds.

PC runs Windows 7 Enterprise, SP 1
Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20 GHz 3.33 GHz
Installed RAM 4.00 GB
64 bit OS

Any suggestions on how I can throttle BOINC back? If it keeps going in this direction, I will reluctantly have to discontinue my participation in both programs.

It's known to the developers that the client leaks memory, but it's quite difficult to track what causes it and then fix that as not everyone's BOINC is affected. The only work-around is to exit BOINC fully & restart it.

Science applications taking up lots of memory aren't a BOINC problem. That's something that the project dictates. 207MB of memory used by an application isn't that much, especially not when computers these days ooze memory and 4GB is the minimum you get with new systems. If you still find it a problem, you'll have to post a complaint about it on the Einstein forums. It's their application.

What Boinc version is this on?
