I have an i7-2720QM, 8 gigs DDR3 memory since 4.28.11. Until about 4 weeks ago, this machine ran BOINC, 75% of cpu's 60% cpu time, just fine.

Then, one fine day, we (me and our I/T professional) saw temps over 90 deg C and the machine blue screened. This was the first time, so we just re-started it. After running only about 5 minutes, it blue screened again. The hardware was checked, all fine. So, we began removing non-critical software. This is my work machine, so, of course, BOINC was on the hit list.

With various programs removed, the machine ran fine.

We decided to try TThrottle and set the cpu temperature at 60 deg C with BOINC re-installed. With BOINC running, the temps blew right through that into the high 80's and the machine blue screened after about 10 minutes.

W/O BOINC, the machine seems to run fine. But, this is a hyper threaded quad, so at 75% of cpu's, I am giving up six threads.

Any ideas? It is my machine, but the company paid for it, so I cannot risk its health.

Have you given it a spring clean yet? it doesn't take long for the CPU cooler to start accumalating dust, is it a Stock Cooler?, or an aftermarket Heavy Duty Cooler?
