Is there any way to restore the older gui (6.10.60 or older) to the newer versions of the client, such as the 7 series? I absolutely hate the fact that the BOINC developers arbitrarily decided to make me open a new window to look at messages instead of just tabbing over to them and they put a "notices" tab in it's place. To me, that notices tab is relatively useless whereas the the message tab is something I use quite a lot.

Can I pull a file out of an older version of the client and drop it in place in the newer clients? If not, can the BOINC developers give us an option to change those 2 around and let us run the messages in a tab and the notices in a new window?

BTW, I am running the Windows X64 versions of the BOINC client on my machines except for my laptop, which is running the x86 version. The majority are Win 7 but I do have Vista SP2 on the laptop. Any help on this issue would be much appreciated. :)

You just need a copy of boincmgr.exe and Boinc.dll from a Boinc 6.10.60 Installation, eithier over-write boincmgr.exe with the old version, or rename it so you can use eithier,

Not arbitrarily, but due to the outcome of a poll held over the course of 6 months under resident users and newcomers alike.

Why do people always feel that changes made to BOINC are done at a whim and always to frustrate the old constituency, never to better the use of BOINC for newcomers, who might be seeing all those messages as errors and therefore abandoning the use of BOINC before they had a real chance to get acquainted with the program? Never thought of that one, huh? ;-)

The BOINC 6 manager isn't completely compatible with V 7.

Better use BoincTasks that is kept up to date with the V7 releases.

Before the change to the GUI, I didn't even know about the message boards here on the client itself. And I'm probably not the only one either who wasn't aware of the message boards for the BOINC client. But it still doesn't change the fact that the developers of the BOINC software could have left us long time users a way to tab the messages instead of having to open a new window to read them. These are my opinions only and don't represent any particular team opinions or any other person's opinion, BTW. I am here now to voice my discontent over the GUI change.

Fred, I might check out BoincTasks, but I don't particularly like having to run a third party app to monitor when IMO BOINC broke the easier way to monitor within the BOINC client. :( I had read about the replacing a few files thing some time ago but couldn't find which files with a quick search, so I am glad that you let me know that the version 6.10.60 BOINC Manager isn't completely compatible with version 7.

And if the people in charge of the BOINC client don't plan to give us a way to revert back to tabbing the messages within the main program, at least give an easy to find a link to 6.10.60 or 6.10.58. All the 64 bit clients linked on the downloads page for Windows are to versions with the new interface. I'm about to revert some newer clients back to one of those if I can find them in the downloads sections of some of my computers. And if I trash some work, then so be it. I heartily detest the new interface, so much so that right now I don't care if reverting trashes hundreds of wus.

All BOINC versions (even Alpha, Beta) are here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/?C=M;O=A

It's easy to see as all the Download links begin with:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.0.28_windows_intelx86.exe

?C=M;O=A are only the ordering options:
C=M means Column=Last modified
O=A means Order=Ascending

(I'm still on BOINC 6.10.58
About "The BOINC 6 manager isn't completely compatible with V 7" I think that only means you can't see/change some new options.

You can run 2 BOINC managers (v6.10.x + v7) at the same time.
The (new) BOINC Manager is started automatically from the registry 'Run' key.

To run old BOINC Manager 6.10.60 alongside with the new:
- Claggy: "You just need a copy of boincmgr.exe and Boinc.dll from a Boinc 6.10.60 Installation"
- rename boincmgr.exe to boincmgr_6.10.60.exe
- copy boincmgr_6.10.60.exe and boinc.dll to where your current BOINC installation is (e.g. C:\Program Files\BOINC)
Make a shortcut (.lnk) for boincmgr_6.10.60.exe
Edit shortcut to put /s at the end (makes it start minimized):
"...\BOINC\boincmgr_6.10.60.exe" /s
Put that shortcut in the 'Start Up' folder (in Start Menu)
)

There is also mirror here:
http://einstein.ligo.caltech.edu/download/boinc/dl/?C=M;O=A

Note:
These installer files for BOINC 6.10.58 are broken (too small size on both servers):
boinc_6.10.58_windows_intelx86.exe
boinc_6.10.58_windows_x86_64.exe
