If I run my laptop for 3 hours and one of the tasks is running for that time, then I switch computer off, I expect to see that 3 hours of that task has been completed when I switch the computer back on again.
However sometimes it is only showing as little as 15 minutes of work has been completed against that task.
Is there any way of ensuring that none of the work already done is lost?
I have tried closing down BOINC, but that does not seem to make any difference.
As I only use the laptop for a short time each day there seems little point in running BOINC since it is never likely to finish a task unless there is a solution to this problem.

Which project is this, does their app checkpoint often?

Sorry, I do not understand what is meant by 'does their app checkpoint often'. Can you explain?

My laptop is a Toshiba C660D and has Win7 Home Premium 64 bit with an AMD E-300 APU,(2 core), with Radeon HD 6310 Graphics running at 500MHz. Memory is 6Gb, processor is 1.3GHz. The GPU driver is ATI Technologies 28/6/11, version 8.863.0.0. Direct X is version 11.1 I believe.

BOINC version 7.0.25 is now installed. I assume that the start up messages are from the Event Log as follows :-

The Computing for Clean Water project, c4cw_target..., looks as if it has no problems. However the first one for the Clean Energy Project, E207058..., does lose time.
I switched the computer off after it had been running for 48 minutes, and when I switched it back on again it only showed 36 minutes. After it showed that it had been running for 1hr 51 min I switched the computer off again and it showed 39 minutes had been run when the computer was switched on again. I switched the computer off again after another hour and when I switched it on again it was back to 38 minutes. This means that about 2 hours 30 minutes computing time was wasted on this project because the computations were repeated.

If there is no solution to this problem there is no point in me running BOINC on this computer. (I do run it on my desktop computer which is rarely switched off.)

If someone can suggest a solution I will be most grateful.

Checkpoints are application specific. You will need to go the WCG site and check there for details of the checkpointing for each app. You will then have to select in your WCG preferences which apps you can run that will suit your style of operation.

BTW a checkpoint is a point in the calculation that an app can save and then recover from, not all calculations are suited to this.

Thanks Trog Dog,

That answers the question I was asking. Do you know if it is possible to subscribe to all World Community Grid projects on one computer but select those projects with short times between checkpoints on another computer? If not then I guess I can create a new identity on the second computer and be selective about which projects I subscribe to.

I'm not sure if you can do this by venue (eg default, home and office), give it a try - I'll spin past wcg myself later tonight and have a look at their preferences and see if I can see anything.

Edit: Actually check out the device profiles settings (at wcg web site) I think you can select the projects per device
