Hi - just thought I'd share my experience with you - and tell the developers there may be a bug...

I opened boinc_6.12.26_windows_x86_64 I think, saw the 'News' post about an update available with a Download link... so gave it a try.
The link downloaded and launched boinc_6.12.33_windows_x86_64 successfully.
The installation had some dire moments though:
During the install process - both monitors went BLACK.
No keyboard response - no CTRL-Alt-Del reply... Solid HD light...
Now - some people might panic here and reboot which could cause problems... I waited.
Eventually I was presented a Windows Login page - the one with the users listed to click and login...
AND - my Login Icon was MISSING...

First thought - someone at BOINC put a trojan / virus in the release which just wiped my identity from my system. So - I clicked Shutdown... system shut down, waited a few seconds and powered on again.
System loaded - my login was back - logged in - but BOINC would not 'connect'.
Manually exiting it and restarting it showed a panel stating 'insufficient privilages - contact your adminstrator and something about the BOINC username needing privilages.
I Uninstalled boinc_6.12.33_windows_x86_64, waited a few seconds... and reinstalled it again. Everything is back to normal now :)

Quite the scare - your developers really need to test this scenario and answer why my screen went black and login ID appeared removed from system. Possible related to my CTRL-ALT-DEL press during install??? I did not press enter... and there definitely appears a problem with running via News link - related to installer level - like BOINC installed under a guest authorization? and thus failed to run on my Admin account?..

So - word of advice to anyone here - do not use the link in the NEWS to update BOINC... and if you do - just uninstall and reinstalls to reset permissions on the components.

I forwarded this to the developers, they want to investigate. So for that they need more information, not just on your BOINC version numbers.

Please tell what your system is, operating system, brand and model of your videocard(s), drivers installed etc. Are you using the GPU(s) for CUDA/CAL/OpenCL calculations? If so, was one of those busy at the time of the upgrade, or did you exit BOINC first?

Also give information on heat, when was the last time you cleaned all dust out of your system? Just give any information your can think of, no matter how minute and insignificant it may seem.

6.12.33 for Windows will not install. It pops the dialog box looking for source "1". When you locate boinc.msi on the hard drive it says it's invalid. I see a lot of other threads where this version has failed. How about posting a link to a previous version that does install correctly while you figure out why this install package is whacked?

Because it isn't whacked.

There are two possibilities for an invalid boinc.msi:

Your copy of the new v6.12.33 installer may have been whacked by a bad download. Delete it, download a fresh copy to your hard disk (save it locally, don't try to run it directly from the download link). Check that the file size is right (i.e. that you've got a complete download) before trying to install again.

Or: your previous boinc.msi - needed to uninstall the previous version - may have got damaged since you installed the last one. The other threads, and the linked FAQ, have advice on how to cope with that scenario.

Neither of your solutions rings true. I did download a second copy of the installer (that was the first thing I did before I came to this website), same size, same error. The previous boinc.msi was valid, because BOINC is no longer installed on the machine. Other suggestions?

That's odd.

The copy of boinc_6.12.33_windows_x86_64.exe that I downloaded a while back (8,417,328 bytes, MD5 hash 4FFC4EE49EFA55AE2A1188909ECD702F) installed just fine and has been running ever since - for 64-bit, I can only offer one installation on Windows 7 Home Premium as evidence. The 32-bit versions were successful on both WinXP and Win7.

I'm afraid the lack of 'me too' complaints all over these (and other project) message boards still suggests that your problem is closer to home.

Here's what the installer program does:
When started it will invoke the uninstaller of the previous BOINC version first, to uninstall the previous version. This will delete all BOINC program files, before the installer continues with installing the new BOINC program files.

Both of these use a file called BOINC.msi, but this isn't the same file.
You don't say which Windows you use, but in Windows 7, all installed programs using an .msi file are found in C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\, all under their own \{32 hexadecimal characters\ directories.

Since we have these 32 hexadecimal characters as a directory name, and these are random, yet only one of each can be on the same system at once, you can have multiple BOINC.msi files on your system. For example, I have 45 BOINC.msi files on my system. This is because I have been switching through a lot of versions lately to test a couple of things. From the outside it's impossible to see which BOINC.msi file starts which BOINC (un)installer. You can only figure that out by starting it. Neither the BOINC uninstaller nor Windows will remove the left-over BOINC.msi file after they're done with it. These stay on your system.

However, it can happen that Windows loses track of where it put some of these files, or they go corrupt on your disk due to whatever reason. Then what happens is that you get an error message when the BOINC installer tries to uninstall the previous version of BOINC and that's what you are running into. It has nothing to do with the original problem in this thread, while it can be solved with any one of the steps, most specifically the first one, in the FAQ.
