Downloaded 6.12.33 the normal way but it failed to finish install. Works okay witb XP3.

I had to rename BOINC application data folder to BOINCOLD to save data for later. Then I deleted 6.12.26 using the control panel uninstall. Once I uninstalled, I ran the download for 6.12.33 and it completed okay. Then rename BOinc data folder to BOINCnew and BPOINCOLD to BOINC. Started Boincmgr and everthing is working great.

Trying to install 6.12.33 on my 64bit i7 Windows 7 system results in an unexpected shutdown. Very nice.

I can't seem to find any mention of anyone else with similar problems.

Poor show.

Unexpected shutdown of what? the Boinc Install Program? Boinc Manager? the Boinc Client? Or Windows?

If no one else has reported this problem, then you're the first, It's only a Poor Show that you haven't followed Ageless's 'when requesting help' post:

When you're requesting help on these forums, please be so kind as to give information about which BOINC version you run (See Help->About BOINC in BOINC Manager), about your system, the projects you are attached to and what you have done so far to try to remedy the problem.

Follow these simple steps:
- In all cases: Please tell us which BOINC version you are using. You can find this information in BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Help->About BOINC Manager.

- When BOINC Manager refuses to make contact with the client, make sure that you did allow both Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe through your firewall. Check that your firewall didn't receive an update and reset connections. If it worked before and now it doesn't, it's something on your system that changed. You just have to work back and figure out what. For other hints on this specific problem, see this FAQ.

- When having problems with tasks (not) switching, please make sure to post which projects you're attached to and which are all allowed to fetch work and which have work. Check that you didn't set your preferences on the project web site to omit using your CPU or GPU. Check that you didn't suspend the project, the tasks or the use of the piece of hardware.

- If you have preferences problems, please post the contents of your global_prefs.xml file and if it exists the contents of the global_prefs.override.xml file. These files can be found in your BOINC Data directory.

- If you have problems with your screen saver or graphics, please state which projects you run, which project(s) you have the problem with, what you see and expected to see.
For hardware/software check, please state what your videocard is (brand and model), DirectX version, Operating system and most crucially, drivers version. See this FAQ for other hints.

- When you have installation problems in Windows, check in the Windows Event Viewer (Start->(Control Panel->)Administrative Tools->Event Viewer) for clues and post those in your post. Or give the error number and/or complete error message that the installer shows. Check for the error before posting, write it down or take a screen shot.

- When you see a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), make sure you catch what the error is that's displayed on it. There isn't just one BSOD in Windows, so if you come on the forums and say you caught "the BSOD", you'll always be asked what it said. Be prepared to give that information, either by writing it down, or by checking in your Windows Event Viewer (Start->(Control Panel->)Administrative Tools->Event Viewer).
Please do know that we cannot look over your shoulder to see what you see or do. You will have to give as much information as you possibly can. You are the one with the problem, so you will have to be as informative as possible to give us a clue as to what you are on about.

-- In cases where you don't know how to find any information about your system, exit BOINC completely and restart it. Next copy and post the first 20 to 30 lines from the start-up messages. That'll give us enough information about your system, plus it might show a peek into your problem.

Your system isn't registered at the BOINC project, so we cannot look it up and check what it's doing. It's only registered at the projects you attach to and even then, only when it returns errors, can we check what is wrong with it (if the system isn't hidden).

Your system doesn't just consist of a videocard and an Operating System; it'll contain a motherboard, CPU, memory, network card, audio card, drivers, lots of fans, a power supply unit, dust, lots of other programs. Please be as detailed in describing your system as you possibly can. But please, do not copy everything that certain tools will give you as 'details', as that's just too much.

Minimum we request is CPU brand/model/speed, GPU brand/model/speed, amount of RAM, version of DirectX, drivers version for the videocard, your Operating System (and please say if it's 32bit or 64bit).

With thanks for your help and understanding.

I am currently using 6.12.26 without issue.

Upon running the 6.12.33 installer it goes as far as starting to install with the progress bar, then my machine restarts. No BSOD, no error message, nothing.

I re-downloaded the installer just in case it had been corrupted to make sure it wasn't that causing the issue and the same thing happened again.

On the first occasion I had to use a previous restoe point to get me machine to even start up.

I have looked through the PC event log and can not find anything to indicate the cause of the problem.

Here are the first few lines from the BOINC Manager log as per the pasted instructions:

I apologise for not giving all this information at first but I was rather irked that my main machine was bombing while trying to install a relatively minor update. I have never ever encountered this kind of crash with any other software.

Yeah, I had something similar with the 6.13.0 installer. I did see a BSOD though (Stop: 0x000000f4) and went through the whole System Recovery thing. I'd never seen that before, so it was a new experience for me. :-)

But I don't think it's the BOINC installer that did this, it would've happened with any Windows installer you used. The error seems to be a corruption in the registry.

It is reasonably easy to fix and overcome: Uninstall BOINC through Programs->Uninstall a program, and then install the new BOINC.

There is no need to run any registry cleaners. Believe me, that will only make things worse.

Jord, thanks for the info. I will give it a try when I have the time to spare.

I have a registry cleaner that is pretty good, but I always back up before every clean up.

I had a chat with one of the developers. He also feels it's the Windows Installer that does this, and then more precisely the part that makes a restore point. All Windows Installer files (MSIexec.exe and the .MSI files) will make a silent restore point when you install any program with such an installer.

It can happen that corruption occurs at making the restore point. When you then next run any program using the Windows Installer, it'll fall over this corrupt entry and instant BSOD or reboot the system. Therefore, that it happened to you (and me) with the BOINC installer is mere coincidence. It could've happened with any program you went to install that uses a Windows Installer.

Hmmm. Seems like I'm going to have to reformat this machine. It's rebooting right left & centre. I can't even run the uninstaller from safe mode without a restart.

Ah well. At least all my data is on a 2nd drive as well as being backed up in the cloud.

Another weekend spent tinkering! Oh joy.

Thanks for all the help. At least I'll get rid of all the spurious programs etc.
