Thanks, the use of video is becoming much more prevalent in all sorts of areas. But, the use of torrents involving downloads is not. Most organizations are now taking advantage of the ubiquity and newly high quality of YouTube. This includes CERN and many of the US DOE labs.

I went to the videos to watch with Bitorrent, nothing happened. so I started the download; but it was going to be 8 hours.

Downloading the videos should not take 8 hours as there is a gigabit server behind that. It should be pretty quick actually, based on your maximum download speed.

Youtube is starting to use more and more ads and downloading the videos from youtube not so great....
But torrent, being really Open, free and very reliable seems to be a good choice (I took this choice)

"How does BOINC work": Looks like the download speed is capped, as it started at 165KB/s here and is going down (now at 60 KB/s.

"Quake-Catcher Network: the client and the server" : This one comes in at between 1.6KB/s and 110KB/s. This is going to take 2 days.

"Quake-Catcher Network: the sensors, the science and the outreach": This one comes in at between 7.2KB/s and 14.5KB/sec. This is going to take a day.

My download speed isn't capped, it's set to Unlimited, meaning you can use the full 50Mbit (I have reached 6.2MB/s == 49.6Mbit!). This isn't reaching that.

I am not going to try all downloads as it's pretty clear that your statement about these speeds being based on my download speed is wrong. Even when the first video is now coming in at 850KB/s, it is nowhere near my maximum download speed of 6MB/sec. Not even on your Gigabit server.

The download speeds are through torrent based on how many other people have the file, how much of the file they have and how quickly they have set their uploads. It isn't based on the upload speed of your server.

You may not be connected to my peer then....or some issue is occuring...
Anyway, I'm going to release them under a regular web access then.

It can indeed takes time to reach your maximum speed. It also depends where you live, as my server is located in France.
And insure you that you don't have any firewall blocking your p2p port.

I've made a test with a friend, using a similar server than I, still in France. His download speed reached 15mb/s and takes less than a minute.
I might try with bigger file to see how fast it can be but I guess it is not very useful here.
(My max under torrent was 25mb/s but 45mb/s using HTTP, after the hardware might not be powerfull enough)

Anyway, if torrent doesn't suit you and if you prefer download the file in a passive way, I've set up a share space:

Great if you can otherwise put up the videos. If we could be notified via this thread when they are up, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks, I got the files to download and play in VLC.

Most interesting to me personally was the presentation on LHC@home, my least productive but favorite project. The speaker said that they were going to have work for the Linux platform only.

I have to wonder, do they realize how many machines they might be giving up by not doing something for Windows machines? For the thousands of us who ran simulations for them prior to the start-up of the LHC? Mostly for no credit as so many failed because of "crashing into walls" in the simulation?

I would love to be working on this project. I am not the type to be getting involved with Linux, but I am running six Windows machines, four of which are less than a year old, hyper threaded quads, lots of threads. There are more and more people like me.

They are giving up a lot.

Actually LHC@home is not know as Test4theory (Still in dev)

Because it is very complicated to maintain differents applications for us (Especially because they use big library and have a lot of dependencies) they are trying (And it's working so far) to use the technology of virtual machines.

Ie, BOINC download a virtual machine, the machine starts and crunch for xx hours.
Like this, they are able to offer a unique virtualmachine to every platform.

I recommand you to check the link.

Happy crunching

dudumomo-

Thanks so much, I went to the project pages inm the link, I read through the news items, it seems that Windows machines are being used at this stage.

I would like to be a part of this project. I need an invitation to attach. How do I arrange for that?

It's quite an interesting project as it is a new concept. (But there are pros and cons)

Everything is explain here:
http://boinc01.cern.ch/join-us

You need to send them an email to ask for an invitation code.

Happy crunching.

Thanks to Dave Anderson for the video about t4t. I got the invitation, installed the M box on three machines, so far everything is performing properly.
