BOINC keeps hogging all my CPU time. I set the General and Home Preferences when the computer is in use but there is a message every time I start up saying "General preferences not found, using BOINC defaults" which apparantly is run always. Any ideas before I just give up and uninstall it?

SETI@Home was great - let's go back to that.

It sound like you may not have set the computer to your home setting. It is not very intuitive.

This is done on your Seti account page -
Computers on this account 'View' -
click on computer ID -
scroll to bottom of the page -Location setting. set to 'home' and update.
Wait a minute or two for the web site to process the change.

In the program manager Projects tab
highlight Seti and click update.
In the Command menu set to Run based on preferences.

A few housekeeping points.
1. Seti-Classic is dead and buried. The main reason is financial. There was no money to keep it going. There was money to be found for a more generalized distributed computing system, so Boinc was created and Seti was resurrected as its test bed. You can read more on Why did we have to move to BOINC? a reprint of a post from Matt Lebofsky who was there at the beginning.

2. Boinc-Seti like Seti-Classic is design to use 100% of your free CPU cycle. Boinc runs at an even lower priority (just above idle) than Classic, which means that it gives way to any other activity on the computer. Generally only graphic intensive (games, photo/movie rendering) or number intensive (large spreadsheets) programs will be effected by its presence. I runs Boinc 24/7.

For future reference. Help can usually be obtain faster on the Seti boards or following the Community link on the Seti pages. There are many more people monitoring those boards and are ready to answer any Boinc related or Seti specific questions.
