Sony Electronics today announced that its VAIO computers now come equipped with BOINC software that users can opt to run. Once activated, the software connects with IBM World Community Grid, supporting a variety of humanitarian research.

Definately good news, hopefully the start of something big.

Scientific Research for non-scientists has got to be good idea (whilst the idea of science retains a generally good name).

I am pleased to read this. It is a major win for BOINC, but I am curious to see how this plays out. I wonder if it will help or hurt projects not part of the WCG.

Time will tell.

I think and hope that we'll have another return : more interest on personnal grid computing, like Folding@home did it with Playstation 3.

I know some of cruncher who did some research on the web to understand better and found another project !

Almost people will certainly nether use BOINC too, but 1 more PC is already better than 0, isn't it ?

For people worried about the software not uninstalling everything.

Sony did include everything needed to remove all of the files and registry entries left behind after uninstalling the agent. However, they didn't include the logic to remove the users and groups created during the install.

From this Spring onwards, users and groups will be removed when a user decides not to participate in World Community Grid. Sony adds this logic to their installer.

Interestingly... A week ago I've got a box in hand with a brand new i5 VAIO to install software on it. I was off course curious, but there was no BOINC inside.

Maybe already pre-removed? :-)

Reliable sources, I cannot disclose, tell that the program was just extended for another 6 months, but it said to apply to the USA! (which does not mean to say it's not on new Vaio's going to other parts of the planet :D

I've (off course :-) installed BOINC there (manually). Unfortunately it is not very usable - even when limiting the CPU (it's a i5) frequency to its lowest possible frequency (around 1.2 GHz) and BOINC to calculate with either just 1 core or only on GPU (its temperature rises from some 43°C to around 58°C - actually not that high), the fan immediately gets loud intrusive enough to stop it :-(

I still have to try to use all 4 cores on the CPU's full frequency... But this might also be a reason why BOINC is not automatically included everywhere.
