reboot did not help

WUs are started by boinc and run OK, port 31416 is tied to boinc.exe, OS is win7 x32, firewall on or off makes no difference.

Did you try to (re)install any version once more after the reboot?

If you launch one more BOINC Manager, is it able to attach to the local client, or does it complain too?

oh, it happens now on my home pc running win7 x64 with 6.10.58

uninstalled, re-installed (default options), reboot, re-installed (->repair)...still stuck with the popup message.

I can see boinc.exe and boincmgr.exe are connected:

How many tasks are downloaded on that machine?

BOINC used to get problems when that number reached several thousand.

Not another BOINC client (the client in standard configuration is preventing other instances to be run in parallel), another BOINC Manager...

He seems to be running Rosetta exclusively. I do not expect that many tasks from Rosetta...

launching another BOINC manager results in two hanging BOINC managers..

update: clicking exit button on one of the two popup windows makes all tasks and boinc.exe to exit, leaving the other manager with "cannot connec to host, retry?" message

Could you please try out the 6.11.7 Development version?

installed 6.11.7:

manager waiting on connection, manager and boinc connection estabilished (according to netstat), nothing happens in std*.txt files in ProgramData\BOINC, two tasks running as configured...let's reboot

reboot: everything looks fine, problem disappeared
second reboot: everything looks fine, problem disappeared

looks like it's fixed now, later on I'll check on my win7 x64.

Thanks.

Now I've right-clicked the tray icon->exit, then restarted boinc manager...hanging again!

noticed that exiting from the tray does not kill all the processes
killing boinc.exe and the two tasks then restarting boincmgr = same problem

going to reboot again

after reboot boincmgr starts ok, exiting from tray icon does not kill boinctray.exe
I killed boincray.exe then restarted boincmgr.exe....problem!

Despite its name, boinctray.exe has nothing to do with the system tray. It is the BOINC idle detection program, checking for mouse movements and keyboard taps. It won't be stopped when you exit BOINC Manager, as you may need it again in the future. It's also not started by BOINC Manager or any other part of BOINC. It only runs from the registry, once you start up the computer. Although you can start it manually from the BOINC programs directory; once (double)clicked, it won't show any notification that it's running, other than in Windows Task Manager.

As for the "communicating with BOINC client" message, see this FAQ for more information on this message.
