I just updated to the new 10.8 Catalyst drivers and apps for my ATI 5970's and now all GPU apps are failing. I have currently suspended GPU WU downloads, but thought you might someone may be able to tell me what is causing the unhanded exception... bad install, incomparability, or what.

The behavior is the WU counts down the minutes to completion, but never stops nor does the progress indicator move from the initial 0.000%.

One of the WU that failed:

The collatz GPU WU fail in the same way as well.

Any thoughts?

Return to Catalysts 10.6 or before. Complain about it at ATI/AMD, if you can (forums).

Since you didn't state your OS:
Link for older 64bit drivers
Link for older 32bit drivers

And don't forget to tell the people at Milkyway & Collatz about it. It isn't a BOINC problem, really. More of a problem with the drivers in combination with their science application.

Thanks for the response Ageless.

I wanted to see if the issue was just me or a larger problem. I already planned to drop back to 10.7 if 10.8 was the issue as 10.7 works fine for me.

havn't seen any issues so far with 10-8 drivers on my HD5670, may try to download some Collatz tasks to see if these fail for me.
(Win7 x64, HD5670 + GTX465 Boinc:6.11.6)

[EDIT] Just downloaded and started a Collatz task seems to be running fine so far

Seems like a problem with my machine as after reverting to 10.7 still having the issues... Why can't I have a simple problem for once.

Figured out the root of the problem... had 2 system changes and blamed the usual suspect when it was another. It is not the Catalyst update, but is dealing with monitor setup.

Situation where GPU Units function: Dual 5970 in non-crossfire or crossfire mode when 2 monitors are hooked up to one graphics card.

Situation where GPU Units do NOT Function: Dual 5970 in non-crossfire with 3 monitors hooked up. 2 on the 1st card and 1 on the second.

(crossfire does not work when using 2 cards and the 3 dvi connections for 3 monitors (card 1 x 2dvi, card 2 x 1 dvi hooked-up))

With a 2 monitor dvi setup on one card the WU work installing the 3rd monitor dvi on the second card dvi the work units do not progress.

Heck, I'd just like BOINC to see both ATI cards (non-xfire). For now the 2nd card is moved back to the machine I'd robbed it from. I was told that if I xfire them Collatz will run on them both but that wasn't really my goal.

However, since BOINC doesn't even report the 2nd card isn't that a BOINC issue? Any chance that re-installing Cat 10.8 while BOTH cards are installed would make any difference?

From my post on Collatz but also posted on DNETC:

I've got a machine running Ubuntu v10.04 x64. With fglrx installed from the repos a HD4850 works fine.

With fglrx removed and catalyst v10.8 installed from the AMD site it works fine with a HD5830 in it once you add gfarmerfr's fix into the startup script:
xhost local:boinc &> /dev/null

When I plugged in a 2nd HD5830 boinc is not seeing it:

However, since BOINC doesn't even report the 2nd card isn't that a BOINC issue?

Not necessarily. Since it can find your first GPU, there must be something about the second one that isn't correctly done. Permissions or drivers. BOINC checks if it can find a certain file within the drivers, before stating it found your GPUs.

I don't know how it is on Linux, but on some Windows versions you have to install the drivers per device. Is it possible it needs to be done that way on your distro as well?
