I have been using BOINC 6.10.18 with the ATI drivers in Cat 10.2 I just downloaded and installed Cat 10.3 and not BOINC will no longer connect to the local client

Ive the same Problem with my built-in Ati HD4200 on a Win7 (64) machine with the ati 10.3 drivers.

Looking at the taskmanager shows that the boinc.exe process stops a few seconds after started by the boinc manager. (tried with 6.10.18 and 6.10.36)

I have created a test executable to try and help narrow down this crash, it can be found here:

When running this under the 'Command Processor' on Windows, you'll see the message 'CAL has CRASHED during initialization.' when the crash has been detected, otherwise you'll see 'CAL has been successfully initialized.' if things worked properly.

If you see the 'CAL has CRASHED during initialization.' message could you email me at 'rwalton @ ssl . berkeley . edu' so I can forward your email address to the guys at ATI.

I am curious which models of GPU are affected and that OS is being used. Feel free to email that or post it.

Same problem here.

I ran your aticrashtest.exe program and I get the same behavior when trying to run boinc - my display driver apparently crashes and recovers.

I have Win 7 x64, ATI 10.3, ATI All-in-Wonder HD and an ATI 5450 cards.

I thought the problem was after I changed out my secondary card for the newer 5450. But the other posters indicate they have Cat 10.3, which I just upgraded to since my new card was supported by it. So it is likely the video driver.

I am a developer and have a full suite of tools - if I can be of any assistance, let me know.

There are no limitations specified in the release notes as far as I could see. And here there is no mention of a workaround.

I am having the exact same issue. I am using Catalyst 10.4 on an Gigabyte 5870 card. 10.2 worked great. I just installed 10.4 and received the same client connection error that is being described with 10.3

Forgot to mention that I am using Windows 7 64 bit.

One manifestation of this issue appears to happen with machines that have both an Nvidia card and a ATI card. If this is your problem uninstall one of the cards.

Both vendors do not support running both at the same time and do not look like they are going to fix the issue anytime soon. ATI has been made aware of the issue.

Did you fully uninstall the video card drivers for the Nvidia?
Just uninstalling through Add/Remove Programs leaves traces of drivers behind, it's always done that on Windows. So use a cleaner app like Driver Sweeper (freeware).

How to use ?

Guru3D - Driver Sweeper is very easy to use. You only have to select the drivers you want to clean.
The best way to clean drivers is to first uninstall the drivers using the official uninstallers, reboot in Safe Mode and run Guru3D - Driver Sweeper. However, rebooting and not going into Safe Mode also works, but can cause some files not to be cleaned.

I used Driver Sweeper and it found a bunch of Nvidia files and folders that were not deleted using the Windows uninstall feature. I delete all of the Nvidia files. Then I deleted and reinstalled ATI Catalyst 10.4. I am still having the same issue. BOINC can't communicate with the client. The error box says, Communicating with BOINC client. Please wait...

I am willing to try something else. Let me know if you have any other ideas. Thanks.

The 'client', which does the work, and
The manager or 'gui', which shows you what the client is doing.
These 2 'talk' to each other on a port, which may be blocked, so it could be a firewall problem.

The "go look it up" responces don't help much. I did some digging and I couldn't not find anything that was specific to the problem that I am having in the BOINC forums. Something changed in ATI's Catalyst drivers between 10.2 and 10.3/10.4 that is preventing BOINC from runing on my PC. I am not a software person so I dont know enough about the iner-workings of BOINC and Catalyst to troubleshoot and find a solution on my own. I will try a specific solution if someone has one. The Driver Sweeper was a good one. Until then I will contiue with trial and error, mostly error, and if I find a fix I will post it. Thanks.

Doug, I was seeing the same thing that you are reporting. I dropped back to 10.2 and am now running without problems. Save yourself some grief and roll back for now. Just my 2c.

I'm seeing the same thing with Boinc 6.10.45_64 and Win 7 64bit, been running O.K with Cat 10.2 and 197.25, but needed to upgrade to Cat 10.4 to test an OpenCL app,
got it installed, but Boinc wouldn't start, GPU-Z crashes and so does the app under test, uninstalled 10.4, GPU-Z works, Boinc doesn't, uninstalled 197.25, installed 197.57,
no change, reinstalled 10.4, no change, uninstalled 10.4, installed 10.2, Boinc and GPU-Z now work again,
