my idea is for a change to the way boinc handles multiprocessor machines, the current scheme of "use X processors on multiprocessors" works well if you have one multi, or several that have the same number of processors, however, i (and i'm sure quite a few other people) have differing machines, i personally have 1 quad system, 2 dual systems, and a few single systems, what i'd personally like is to have the ability to set % of processors to be used (ie 50% so that only 1 is used on the dual systems, and 2 on the quad) or be able to actually specify the number per host somehow, please feel free to add any better suggestions but this is just a concept idea

it's just annoying to either have to choose between using a comfortable number of processors on my quad (about 2 or 3) or having to specify a lower number so that the dual systems are happy but my quad system is crawling along

so in essence, what i personally would like to be able to do, is to specify a % of processors to be used (about 50-75%) so that 2-3 are being used on my quad, 1 on my dual systems, and obviously 1 on the single systems

obviously there needs to be some code to detect when there's only 1 processor considering you can't use 0.5 of a single CPU :p so maybe have the default as 1 processor (or "100%") and only implement the multiprocessor code when where's more than one CPU (virtual or real) detected by the core client prehaps?

Under preferences I have set up home for single cpu and school for 2 cpus and work for 3 or more cpus.

Add separate preferences for home
Add separate preferences for school
Add separate preferences for work

nice workaround, didn't think of that one, but i suppose that's because i'm already using home for dialup machines (friends computers etc.) school for always-connected machines and work for work computers
