Still trying to get things sorted out.

I got down to no work in anything on this computer. So, I detached from everything. The suggestion of Activity Always and Connect = 0.00 got me no where. So I went back to Activity based on prefs and Connect = .3, which is, I believe, the default.

And, after all that, I re-booted so everything would be read. BOINC Manager came right up and asked me to attach. I attached to Leiden because it had up until now been the most fruitful project. I got one task. I have eight "cores" available and I got one task.

So, O.K., let's add WCG. I got one task.

With Connect =.3 and most tasks only taking 2.5-3.0 hrs on my wall clock (actually my cell phone) I added the Additional buffer = 0.5 days. I know that is high, but I have tried everything else, so why not?

Anyway, the original point of this post, why is Rosetta still in my messages? And why do two of my computers have the line below "General prefs: using separate prefs for home", while the other two say "General Pref: using your defaults?"

What means "home" or "Home"? I see now in the account pages for other than WCG projects a listing of the same categories as the profiles in WCG: Home, School, Work, Default. But I see no way to select which one I want.

It would be nice to be able to use specific prefs for this problem child computer or its problem child operator, yours truly, and not mess with the other computers, if these were really profiles I could select.

0.5 days isn't a big cache, as i said in the other thread,
you can have a cache of up to 20 days,
normally a couple of days is enough.

On each project you have a choice of 4 venues, Default, Home, School & Work,
they are used to give different computers different project preferences,
If you look at your computer's details at each project,
you'll find the options right at the bottom of the page, the "-" is the default option.

"Home" is just a label, as are "School" and "Work".
Call them "Tom", Dick", and "Harry", if that helps.
Or "Red", "Green", and "Blue".
Or any other set of labels.

You need to fiddle with settings in 2 separate preferences to use these:
1) When and how BOINC uses your computer
2) Resource share and graphics

(I'm going by what's in cpdn for this, but other projects should be similar / the same. Except for WCG, which is "a law unto itself". :) )

As to 'using' a venue, this is done as follows:

1) Further down your account page: click on View alongside of Computers on this account
2) Click on the Computer ID for the computer being adjusted.
3) Right at the bottom, there's a drop down list of the 4 options, where --- is the Default option.

As there are 3 venues, you can have up to 3 computers separately adjusted.
More than this and you have to use the similar settings in the menu of the BOINC manager.

The are 4 venues, so you can have 4 computers separately adjusted, ie Default, Home, School and Work.
mind you you'll need Boinc 6.10.19 or later for the use CPU / GPU (enforced by 6.10+ clients) to work properly.

Well, thank you all very much. Especially on using the different preference profiles, home work, school, (sorry, an old WCG hand, so I call them profiles).

I want to be sure to leave my three computers that are doing just fine alone, so I will examine them first and be sure that they are using a profile based on the original BOINC defaults, that is all they have ever needed. So, one profile for that.

Then, I will go to the new computer, adjust what I want, and be sure that it is on its own profile.

I really appreciate this.

I mean, I still do not know the proper balance for the new machine. I am leaning toward Claggy's approach, nothing else of a more minimalist nature has worked; this makes it easier for me to know that the computer and the projects are alligned with each other.
