Message 29210 - Posted: 4 Dec 2009, 16:00:55 UTC

Hello,

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my pentium4 and it is running fine (einstein@home) but when I click the "web site buttons" nothing happens. Via the menu, help to the BOINC web site also doesn't work. Firefox is set as my default web browser.
Does anyone know how to solve this.

Thanks.

Hi Jord,

I have tried and tried but it will not work.
edit etc/public results in error: bash: edit/etc/profile: No such file or directory

whereis Firefox results in:
/usr/bin/firefox /usr/share/firefox

So I type:
edit /etc/profile BROWSER="/usr/bin/firefox /usr/share/firefox" export BROWSER

Given the following errors:
Warning: unknown mime-type for "/etc/profile" -- using "application/octet-stream"
Warning: unknown mime-type for "BROWSER=/usr/bin/firefox /usr/share/firefox" -- using "application/octet-stream"
Warning: unknown mime-type for "export" -- using "application/octet-stream"
Warning: unknown mime-type for "BROWSER" -- using "application/octet-stream"
Error: no write permission for file "/etc/profile"

Error: no "edit" mailcap rules found for type "application/octet-stream"
Error: no "edit" mailcap rules found for type "application/octet-stream"

I think I did something wrong but what?

Thanks for your time.

My knowledge of Linux is very minute. But luckily there are search engines. ;-)

How about this page, or if you're using FF 3.5 beta, this one?

edit etc/public results in error: bash: edit/etc/profile: No such file or directory

The error message shows that you didn't type "edit etc/public" (which is wrong also) but "edit/etc/profile", with the blank missing behind "edit".

As far as I remember "edit" is a generic unix editor, but if not, you can use any other one, as long as you save ASCII only.

Gruß,
Gundolf
[edit]Other than in Windows, '/' or '\' aren't recognised as separators; you need the blank between command (edit) and parameter (/etc/profile).[/edit]

Thanks for the help so far.

@Gundolf: You are right. I saw the missing space myself and tried with the space but same response.

@Jord: One site I did already visit and was no help, the other one neither as still the buttons not work.

I was enthusiastic about Linux but the more I use it, the messier it becomes. Luckily I have still dual boots.
I think I need help from someone who uses Ubuntu 9.10 and has had the same trouble as I have.

What about any other editor program?

What is the result of "ls -l /etc/profile"?

root root and that is the problem. I found out to change this, and the edit editor is working, but the web sites still didn't launch. Checking (so far as I can) shows Firefox is the standard browser, just as before.

Perhaps the problem is that BOINC is not installed as a service because I have to start it manually. I think a course of Linux is necessary.

Thanks anyway Gundolf.
