Message 28846 - Posted: 19 Nov 2009, 3:37:21 UTC

I have read through everything I posted. I am not technically adept, that is why I have posted the messages, and I apologized at the outset for the amount of material.

Out of work is out of work. This is not what I want for an US$1800 machine which should be crunching 8 WU's at all times.

So, no more message or logs for now.

Here is what I am doing:

I saw that most of the WU's I got were less than 3 hours. But connection to the internet at a default of about 0.30 days is about 8 hours. So, I cut it back to 0.10 days, or roughly 2.5 hours.

Also, I gave up on newish and 64bit apps, and went back to an older 32bit app from 2007, 5.8.16. No sooner than I had it launched and attached to projects, the WU's just came flooding in.

I searched all over BOINC Message Boards and WCG forums on Windows 7 and found very little.

I'll be back with results.

If anyone has any comments about Win 7 64 bit and BOINC, I would love to know their experience.

Okay, sorry, I didn't say that you shouldn't paste any logs here. I meant to reduce it to startup and error messages. And I wasn't sure if you had seen that all those manual updates would be fruitless, because BOINC just didn't think it needed more work.

That wouldn't change a thing, because BOINC will connect to the projects whenever the network is available and up/downloads are to do. That preference is solely used to determine the amount of work to be downloaded.

Well done :-)

I'm still running BOINC 5.10.45, not on win7 though. However, I would have thought that your return to 6.6.38 should have solved most of the problems.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Hey Grub-

Thanks. No, I tried the last mentioned, it was no help. And, truth be told, I will now have to wait and see what happens. When I first installed the November 9 app for 64bit, things took off like a rocket ship. When that flopped, I tried the last mentioned and had no good fortune.

So, I will not jump to any conclusions, I will watch.

Hey Grub-

That was Gruß, the German for Greetings.

That symbol at the end is another way of writing a long or double 's' (not sure of its official name, it's 40 years since I learned about it in school!)

You have to be careful of things like that on a multi-cultural and intercontinental message board.

not sure of its official name

Since it replaces the "sz", its German name is "Ess-tset" or "eszet".
Because of its form, we call it "Ringel-S" in The Netherlands.

Message 28872 - Posted: 19 Nov 2009, 20:41:55 UTC

I have news. My good friend has examined in this thread all of the logs and messages I attached. He said he found, and I confirmed, starting up as mitrich, which is something I use as an id some places, but not on BOINC or WCG projects.
My id at WCG is mitrichr, and my user id on all BOINC projects is a complete email address.

So, when I fire up this computer in about an hour, I will look to see in the messages what pops up. But, does anyone have any idea from whence this might come? The computer's name is dektopIII (or desktopiii). There is no reason that I know for this "mitrich" to ever appear on this computer, certainly not with BOINC or WCG projects.

And, yes, he is a good good friend, sitting there and trying to help me.

Hey Sek-

How are you? I took your advice on the I7.

So, are you saying that I need not concern myself with this? I will certainly check the name in the projects tab as soon as I get the computer going.

Even if my friend's observation is not relevant, he is still a very good friend.

Thanks as ever, for your input and advice.

It's your Windows account name that's used by BOINC on the computer. Running as user mitrich just shows that BOINC runs under that account in Windows. As opposed to Running as daemon, when BOINC is installed as a service.
