Running Win XP on Dell Insporion E1705 dual core laptop Have noticed increasing speed problems. Checked for virus, root kits, malware--clean and secure. Two BOINC processes, I think, take up the largest memory usage--wgc faah autodock 6.07 windows intelx86 and wcg hpf2 rosetta 6.03 windows intelx86. If I end these processes, CPU usages drops to 10-30%. With them running it's 50-90, even 100%. Runing BOINC mgr version 6.6.36. In preferences, memory usages is set to 30 % when computer is in use, and 95% when idle. I have no processor restriction set--might that be something to tweak? I don't recall having these problems a few months ago.

Any suggestions?

Additional information about my problem. I noted that the latest version is 6.10, so I tried to download and install. It crashed with a message that it can't find the msi file in C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\ ........ So I tried to uninstall the current verions 6.6 in Add/Remove Programs. The uninstall crashed with the same error message. So I seem to have a corrupted file that I can't uninstall or reinstall. ...

Either reinstall that version of 6.6 with a repair installation, then immediately install 6.10 on top, or use the other options in this FAQ.

As for your speed problems, since it's a laptop, have you checked that its cooling grids are open, not clogged up with dust? Did you check at what temperature it is running?

I have already tried the repair install--fails with the same error message. Should I try to delete the Downloaded Installation file, which I can find. BOINC seems to keep looking there for the msi file, but the file is all numbers and characters.

My grids appear clean. I don't know how to check temp, but I run the laptop with a spacer in the back to keep the base off my table top. It never feels particularly hot to the palm.

Try the Microsoft Installer Clean-Up Utility option in the FAQ first.
It's way easier than all those others.

Problem is solved. After downloading SpeedFan to see that my CPUs were not overheating, then reading more replies, I went to the FAQ site and found a thread that related to my error--Windows Installer error 1714, I think it was.--can't find the boinc.msi. I had tried Windows Install Cleanup and BOINC didn't appear in the list of programs. I then followed the suggestion to go to a boinc site that had old version install files, downloaded my old version, ran and installed the .exe file, and then did a repair install of 6.6.36. Then I ran the 6.10.18 install program over the top. It's now working and my CPUs appear to be handling BOINC appropriately--very little CPU memory is being used now.

Thanks for the suggestions and the pointers here and there that eventually led to the solution!
