Recently I updated my PPC Macs (G4 Powerbook, G4 iMac and G5 Power Mac) running 10.4.11 to Security Update 2009-002. At about the same time, I also upgraded BOINCManager to 6.6.20. I run BOINC as a service on all three machines, shortly after the upgrades I noticed that BOINC was no longer running as a service. I tried re-running Make_BOINC_Service.sh script, and updating to 6.6.29 to no avail.

The behaviour was inconsistent, sometimes it seemed the the daemon would finish the current work unit and fail to start another, other times it seemed to stop when I logged out. Sometimes the process would show up in top via ssh and sometimes it would not. Downgrading to v6.2.18 did not resolve the issue either.

Suspecting it was the SU, I upgraded back to 6.6.29 and reverted my secondary desktop to 10.4.11, Security Update 2009-001. Now it is happily running at 100% with no user logged in.

I am going to contact Apple about the situation however I expect no response whatsoever from them. So since I'm pretty much on my own in dealing with this issue, does anyone have any suggestions how to get around the problem w/o reverting to SU 2009-001? Perhaps an easier way to revert to the previous Security Update instead of starting from the 10.4.6 install disc? Would I be at much security risk if I did revert my primary desktop and notebook to the previous Security Update?

I wish I knew how to fix the Make_BOINC_Service.sh script but my skills in this area are minimal. If Charlie Fenton or someone else could take a look at it that would be much appreciated.

Thanks all,
Tina

FWIW, Security Update 2009-003 seems to have resolved the problem and BOINC is now running as a service.
