I recently installed the 6.6.28 version of BOINC for windows, and noticed that my tasks didn't appear to be running when I wasn't logged in. Finally discovered that I had to specifically install BOINC as a service, so I re-installed. The problem I'm now having is that the BOINC service won't run under the boinc_master account. It starts up and then immediately shuts itself down again with no explanation (event viewer just says that it stopped unexpectedly).

I've temporarily got the service running under the Local System Account, but I'd rather not leave it this way, as the Local System Account has full permissions on the computer. Does anyone know what the problem is with the boinc_master account?

I've already tried re-installing BOINC, and I also tried updating the password for the boinc_master account (and of course updated it in the service info as well). Neither one of these things helped.

Thanks!

What version were you coming from?
Have you tried a full reboot (not log off-log back on) to allow for Windows to finalize the making of the account?

Which Windows?

I'm using Windows XP SP3. I'm not sure which version of BOINC I was at before upgrading. I don't think it was all that old...I'm pretty sure it was still a 6.x version (6.4.7, maybe??). I didn't have it installed as a service with the previous version, which I didn't realize until today. I used to have it installed as a service at one point, but I think maybe the last time I did an upgrade that I didn't choose that option (didn't know I needed to - I thought it always installed as a service).

I did try completely rebooting (twice, actually - once after each install).

Thanks!

OK, then please uninstall and reinstall BOINC 6.6.28, but with the log options as given in this FAQ and send the log to Rom Walton (his email address is in the thread) with a complete explanation on what you did etc. The FAQ will explain more.

Ok - I'll try that. Thanks! One other question; both times when I re-installed, and also when I changed the "Log on as" account for the service, it appeared to lose track of the tasks that had been in progress and downloaded new ones. Is there any way to prevent this?

That shouldn't happen if you always install into the same data directory (without deleting files in between) and always get the same host ID assigned.

Considering that, it's probably also wise to do the full uninstall prior to doing the reinstall with log.

A-ha! I figured out what the problem was. The previous version had apparently set my Data directory to be in my own personal user's folder, rather than in the 'All Users' folder. Since the boinc_master account doesn't have a lot of privileges, it wasn't able to access this folder. I re-installed and had it use the 'All Users' folder instead, and now it seems to be running correctly.

Thanks for the advice and the tips, Jord and Gundolf!
