Because nVidia gave manual support on how to add the ability to use CUDA under BOINC and port over the Seti application, while AMD/ATI just said, "Wanna do it? Figure it out for yourself!"

The next BOINC version 6.8 will have ATI support. We hope.
And even then it's pretty quickly as it has only been 4 months since CUDA was added, for Windows only. There is still no out and out support for it for Linux and the Mac, due to lack of correct drivers.

I know, it's not about ATI, but... There's not only SETI - GPUGRID has a Linux 64 CUDA app. And the Nvidia CUDA drives for Linux are available since at least one year, when I started with the first Alpha tests on GPUGRID, so please get your "facts" right...

It's still true that nvidia put money and people to help SETI.

You install an ATI card and it installs Folding at Home on your machine unless you deselect the option.

Maybe ATI picked Folding as it's space to spend money rather than BOINC. Shame for us with ATI hardware but big business do their own things and resource is finite. It would be nice if they supported both project but who knows the whys and wherefores.

Maybe the OpenCL work, if properly supported by the vendors may pay off. Only time will tell if that helps us all.

I applaud the 6.8 thread for forthcoming ATI support. I'm sure that will make alot of people happy (and a small few unhappy as that is the way of the world). Also kudos to Cluster Physik (Gipsel) for his work on Milkyway@Home for ATI, where there is a will there is a way.

Anyone who would be "unhappy" about another platform becoming available for distributed computing (and the resultant increase in scientific knowledge) has the wrong attitude.

I'm really hoping this will be available soon:-) I'm no gamer nor do i use/need a powerful GPU, but i will so get one when the ATI's are supported. I've been wanting and planning the setup for a while, so if Boinc 6.8 is out sometimes (before) next fall i'll be happy! The new 40nm ATI GPU's are being released (>4770), Windows 7 (Oct.) and some interesting stuff are happening at AMD and Intel due for Q3-> But it's been quite nervwrecking to wait:-) But i'm sure it'll all be worth it! Till then, i'll just let my "old" iMac do some crunching:-)

BOINC 6.10 is expected to have ATI support, BOINC 6.8 doesn't have it.

Well, they were sidetrack into producing 6.8 for GridRepublic by mid July. Thing may slip again. There is still a lot of clean up work to improve the handling of GPU/CPU scheduling. I don't really expect to see ATI support until the end of the year with 6.10 or that may even be later with 6.12. Then again, the projects will also need to come up with new applications for this platform.
