One project perhaps, but how many tasks are there in the Tasks tab?
And how many cores/processors does your computer have?

one and one. i think the problem worked itself out but i cant be sure. i opened a command prompt on my one computer, it opened in fullscreen mode, and i dont have a keyboard to exit or esc it. only a mouse... i cant check boinc to see if its working or not until i get a keyboard. the reason for no keyboard is the pc was collecting dust until i decided to run SETI@Home on it, after watching the new movie "Race to Witch Mountain" which references SETI in one scene very briefly. i thought 'oh hey.. ill go install that when i get home' any way...

the one on this laptop is working fine though.

Could that be related to the setting of the preference "Suspend work while computer is in use?" to yes?

That's equivalent to an entry of "<run_if_user_active>0</run_if_user_active>" in the global_prefs.xml file.
