Hi,

I've installed BOINC 6.4.7 on Vista Ultimate, from a user account; it asked the administrator password, it installed and it worked just after the installation; it still works now when I launch it from the admin account (I can see applications running and I can see graphics); but since I rebooted my system, it can no longer work from the user account, if I try to launch boinc manager from the start menu, even with "Runas admin" option, nothing happens

Now:

1) I had this problem since a previous version of boinc (6.4.5)
2) I had already found somewhere on this site that there's a folder without the right permissions in the installation path, and that I should go and set the right permissions on that folder.

What am I supposed to do ? (i.e., what exactly I have to do / set / configure to complete the installation and have boinc running normally also from my user account ?)
If as part of the installation I have to set the right permissions on that folder, why doesn't the installer just tell me to do it ?
This problem was known since version 6.4.5. Why this problem wasn't fixed since then ? Will it ever be fixed ?

I don't think it is a problem that needs to be fixed. BOINC 6 will install a couple of limited user accounts with which the client runs, while BOINC Manager (the GUI) runs under the normal accounts, if they have been told that they were allowed.

If you didn't check the option in the installer that says "Allow all users on this computer to control BOINC", then other users cannot use BOINC Manager, only the administrator account that you used to install it with can.

Wait a moment: the option IS checked. I have these options checked when installing:

Use BOINC Screensaver: yes
Protected application execution: no
Allow all users on this computer to control BOINC: YES

I just uninstalled and reinstalled BOINC 6.4.7, with the options checked as above, but the problem remains.

I don't think it's just about the "allow all users" option, I'm sure I had seen on these forums that there was some folder to be set with right permissions... but I can't find that post anymore, sorry but I haven't too much time for looking for it. What about this ? Perhaps other people with Vista could have this problem(and loose hours of computation), can you tell me what to set in order to get boinc back working ? thanks

Other than your Data directory, which is by default at C:\ProgramData\BOINC ? No, I can't..

But I'll flag this thread for the developer. Perhaps that he has an idea.
It being weekend and sunny in Florida, while reading a laptop in the sun appears to be difficult, it can take a little time. ;-)

finally, I got boinc working.

I set full control for everyone on the boincdata folder. Anyway, nothing happened (perhaps I had to reboot). I then set full control for every user on the Boinc Program folder. Even doing that nothing happened. I was losing hopes.
Then today I restarted the machine, and now boinc works. Perhaps there's no need to give permissions also on the boinc program folder, but anyway a reboot is required.
