i cannot get boinc to run anymore. it always says it's idle instead of showing the seti screensaver. i even started a new seti acct ( after 4 yrs of credit) and reloaded the whole thing from scratch. it still says "boinc is idle". how can i fix this?

OS? Version of BOINC? If you have BOINC Manager, look in the Messages tab, perhaps there is a message there telling you what's going on. Are you attached only to SETI? They have been down for a bit over a week, just now coming back up. If that's the problem, you can go back to your old account... (See the SETI site for information.)

Any work in the "Work" tab? Any projects in the "Projects" tab? We would be happy to help, but we're going to need a LOT more information...

I have been a member of the SETI project since it started.
Every time my computer had a rebuild or major overhaul and I had to reload, SETI forgot me. That is to say, it refused to acknowledge my existance or previous registration. Despite this, it refused my Email address as "an account in that name already exists". Of course it exists - ITS ME!!
However, I always found a way around it. Not interested in personal targets or unit credits or whatever, not too fussed when all previous units discounted and I always restarted from zero.
Tried BOINC once. It screwed up my computer and didn't work. Dumped it and reloaded the "old" programme, which worked just fine.
You really have got it all screwed up, haven't you?
Old sysytem closing down - load BOINC. So far, so good. Follow one of the worst "Help" files I have ever seen to set it up.
(By the way guys, should I mention that half the buttons that you describe either do not exist or are, in fact, called something else?)

Find the original key. It fits, Dandidni, it fits! Set up preferences. OK.
Six hours later, and all I have is a little bouncing logo saying that BOINC is idle. Idle is not quite the word that I would use.

Persevere, reregister (AGAIN!) and access this panel, which I will simply use to say: GOODBYE, AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH.

Whine, whine, whine. Bitch and moan. Criticize that about which you know nothing. You foot-dragging last-minute switchers are the cause of the current BoincSeti problems!!! The transition to Boinc was announced long ago, and if you'd prepared for the future instead of living in the past, you'd have made the change easily. With a gentle, phased migration over the many months that have passed, you'd have been smoothly assimilated across the servers. But NOOOOoooo, you wait until you're absolutely forced to switch. What did you think, way back when you were told umpteen times that SetiClassic was ramping down and closing shop? You thought they were joking? Was it April Fool's Day?

Thank you for your contribution to demonstrating the viability of Distributed Computing. Sorry to see that you are now a quitter.

If you are interested we can explain why you are having these problems.

But, fundamenatlly, as stated on the front of the web site for SETI@Home there were server problems. Just as there were server problems in SETI@Home. In this case, because the transfer of work was affected this caused you to go idle. This also happened a couple times in classic until they started the policy of issuing work even if it had already been done before (they just threw away your work - you just did not see that).

Not allowing people to post to many of the message boards was instituted by a need to stop some people that would create "dummy" accounts to just "spam" the boards. So, for the boards OTHER THAN the Q&P boards, before you can post you have to have completed some work.

Sorry to see you give up so easily. But, I hope you give us another chance ...

I'm having the same problem with my copy of BOINC. I'm using Windows 2000 with the latest BOINC client. The following examples are from rosetta@home. But, all the projects are doing the same thing. I've tried manually setting up the proxy server, but that didn't fix it. It shouldn't be necessary anyway. Is there anything else that I might check? Thanks for your help.

OK, OK, so maybe I was frustrated and angry that I had lost an old friend - that still doesn't allow for the fact that it will not work and there seems to be no help around capable of sorting the problem.
Not being a quitter (as suggested)I started again from scratch, registering with Rosetti. Nothing happened - I was getting messages that some sort of interface was being attempted, and then failing. Finally, one attempt worked, and loads of data and material is downloaded. Because I had clicked on the "Update" button three times in previous attempts, I received three work units. New Problem No 1 - it only works if I have "Run Always" command selected. I have tried shutting down antivirus and firewall, Spybot, etc, and checking that no other process is working - screensaver still says BOINC is idle. New Problem No 2.It seems, now, incapable of communicating with the server. Work unit 1 completed, and attempts made to return result. Monitoring modem shows no activity. It has now completed all three units, and is unable to send results or access new work.

I've had to switch back to preferences to use the machine for other tasks - leaving BOINC on "Run Always" slows everything else down and has caused freezing. Currently, as I write this, it's active. During this message, I left the machine for 10 minutes and the "BOINC is idle" screensaver came up. Broadband modem remained inactive the whole time.

Any ideas?

Looks like you have it setup to run when you are not active. In your preferences is this set to yes or no? ******Do work while computer is in use?*******

Check your firewall settings does it allow Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe access....

Glad to see we haven't lost you, after all :-)

Now, let's get to work. You mention Rosetta specifically, but are you also attached to any other project(s)? If you are on Rosetta only, it may be a Rosetta-specific problem, and should be taken up on the Rosetta boards, because on the project boards, they can "see" details of your attached computers and finished workunit data, info which we cannot access here on the BOINC boards. If you are working other projects, and the same problem arises there, it is almost certainly a cross-project (ergo BOINC) issue, still more easily looked-at on the project board, but within our area here, too. Please keep in mind that the BOINC boards are new, and probably working with the least staff of all, and that ALL messageboards are staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers.

For first, try this: Shut down the PC. Not a reboot, but a complete shutdown.
Wait a minute or two, then restart the system.

Does that fix it?

Else:
Close Boinc Manager.
Navigate to your BOINC folder.
Find and open the file "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" with Notepad.
Delete everything in it (it should be a 32 character hexadecimal key in there).
Press return once, so it shows an empty line in the file.
Save the file and exit it.

Start Boinc Manager.
What happens? Post back with any error messages, as you did on your previous post.

The problem you see is that when Boinc Manager starts, it doesn't start the Boinc daemon (boinc.exe). Hopefully it does start it now.

(edit) The "user is active" is as Jim K has posted, a result of a "Do work while computer is in use" preference setting as "No".

It's listed in the BOINC Wiki (recommended reading) in the error code section as "Internal server error", but industrious minds are still trying to pin it down. At this point, I don't think they know for sure what the fix is, as it's just very recently popped up a lot. Sorry.

James, I see from your messages (thank you!) that you're getting that error from multiple projects, so the "server error" answer is obviously wrong... Unfortunately, I don't think _anyone_ has a real answer for you right now. It appears to happen "more" to those with multiple routers/switches/etc. between them and their ISP, and it is not localized to any one part of the country/world, yet every indication we have is that there is a problem with some ISP somewhere close to the west coast of the U.S. - go figure.

If you are network and PC knowledgeable, I can tell you that for MOST people, lowering their MTU from 1500 to 576 seems to solve this - but that is obviously not an acceptable long-term fix as it slows down all internet communications.

At this point, we are hoping for an updated BOINC client that can recognize the "500" problems better and will have some "retry" code in place to get around it. Or, that whatever "broke", will be fixed at some ISP somewhere. There are a lot of threads on the SETI boards about this, and a lot of traffic on the developer mailing lists...

That's too bad. I'm running the client on three Linux machines at home. They appear to be communicating perfectly. So, its not a complete loss. The machine in question is a Windows 2000 box at work. I manage the network so I know its not the firewall. We're still recovering from Hurricane Katrina, so it very well could be a problem here in Mississippi. The ISP's here have their hands full at the moment. Maybe all we need is a little patience. In the last few months, I've learned to be very patient. Believe me.

James, I see from your messages (thank you!) that you're getting that error from multiple projects, so the "server error" answer is obviously wrong... Unfortunately, I don't think _anyone_ has a real answer for you right now. It appears to happen "more" to those with multiple routers/switches/etc. between them and their ISP, and it is not localized to any one part of the country/world, yet every indication we have is that there is a problem with some ISP somewhere close to the west coast of the U.S. - go figure.

If you are network and PC knowledgeable, I can tell you that for MOST people, lowering their MTU from 1500 to 576 seems to solve this - but that is obviously not an acceptable long-term fix as it slows down all internet communications.

No kidding. I have friends in Diamondhead, and the way I knew things were starting to recover was when his website came back up. Figured if the priorities had gotten _that_ far down the list, it was finally getting better.

If you're the network guy, you probably know how, so you might try lowering the MTU to 576 just long enough to see if that really does get past the problem. If so, then the next version should definitely be what you need. V5.2.15 has not entered testing at all yet, which I had hoped it would by now, so I'll say it'll be at least next week.

It works!!!

I have one small reservation - I had selected "Run Always" to get it going (12:11pm), and it spent the next twenty minutes or so telling me that it was downloading two units, (progress 0%)and running another (progress 30%). The modem was patently downloading nothing, so rather than interrupt whatever was going on, I just left it. Some time later, trying to do some work - (yes, I do work for a living sometimes!!)I noted that everything had slowed down - a quick check told ne that I had less than 16Mb of unused memory. So, downloading or not, I reverted to "Run based on preferences."
During a break, I returned to find Rosetti screensaver blasting away merrily. Fantastic. Checked the manager, and found the following:

So, it appears to be working although the status information looks a little misleading. I can live with that.

I think that, unless you consider that something else is wrong, I'll live with it as it is for a week or so, and if happy, will try loading SETI as well and see what happens.

Sorry, should have made it clearer. Deleting the hex key and adding a blank line to "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" with Notepad is what fixed it.
I had already shut the machine down several times over the previous days to know that that method, while it seems to solve an awful lot of problems, would not work!

This line means that you have "Leave applications in memory when preempted" set to "no", which will cause your Rosetta work to error out. There is a bug in the Rosetta app - it will only work correctly if left in memory.

Leaving the apps in memory will not "cost" anything in RAM, only in swap file space on the disk, so it is perfectly safe to do for 99.999% of people.
