Does anyone have a clue why, when I try to attach to SETI or Rosetta, I get the following error: "The URL you supplied is not that of a BOINC-based project. Please check the URL and try again." (I know I'm cutting and pasting the URLs correctly.)

I'm running 5.2.13 BTW.

TIA,

John Sabal

Hi
Paste your urls here. You must use the http:// bit as well btw.

Did you set up a password in each project acct?????

It doesn't even let me get that far -- I enter the URL and it just comes back "not a BOINC-based project."

You have to go to the site for each project you want to join, and set up a password. The URL to use in attaching is at that site. THEN you come back to BOINC Manager and say "attach to project".

You need to paste the URL you are trying to use here, so we can verify it's the right one for that project. We can't help without information.

Bill -- I HAD accounts, passwords, and proper URLs for SETI and Rosetta but, for some reason, BOINC wasn't recognizing the URLs.

I got the answer to my problem at the SETI site: 1. Uninstall BOINC. 2. Go to "Program Files" and delete the BOINC folder. 3. Restart. 4. Download and install new copy of BOINC software. 5. Attach normally.

I had tried uninstalling BOINC and then reinstalling to no avail. The crucial step was deleting the BOINC folder after uninstalling.

Thanks -- up and running now --
John

Bill --

FYI --

In your reply yesterday to eagleye (who had a similar problem) you said this was not a BOINC issue. I believe it is, as I wasn't able to get BOINC to attach to ANY project. It seems it's a new (?) bug.

One more time:

When BOINC asked for the URL of the project, I entered it (e.g., http://setiathome.berkeley.edu) and the very next screen said "not a BOINC-based project." The email/password screen never came up.

Please look closely at the various threads. You said up front that you were trying to attach to SETI and Rosetta, and we asked what URLs you were using, and if you'd set up accounts on the project sites, beginning the debugging process here. The _other_ people were only trying to attach to a single project, and so we directed them to the project boards.

Two issues; if it is truly a "BOINC" problem, such as "can't connect to localhost", or "can't install", etc., OR, if it is a "multiple project" question, then this is the proper board for the question. If it is a "project" problem, we're trying to direct people to the project boards, for two reasons. One, they'll get better help there, as there are more people, with specific knowledge; and Two, they need to know that "BOINC isn't SETI and SETI isn't BOINC", and that the project boards even _exist_!

Second issue is we can't solve problems by ESP. Unless it's something we've seen before, often enough that a five-word description is plenty to identify it, we have to ask for information. (At the project boards, MOST of the information we would have to ask for is available, unless they've hidden their computers...) A lot of the time, we don't get an answer. I've gone through multiple exchanges with someone, where I ask for "x" in my first response. They give me more information, none of which is relevant, and not "x". So I ask for "x" again. They start getting mad, but still don't give me "x". Sometimes they finally do, other times they leave angry. Maybe I _don't_ need to know "x", but until I've eliminated that as a possibility, since experience tells me it's the most _likely_ possibility, there's little point in going any further.

Let's look at THIS THREAD. You posted your question. Tigher, one of the top networking people on these boards, asked for the URLs you were using. Using the "wrong URL" is the problem, 90% of the time. Jim asked if you had set up a password at the project sites, another very strong possibility for a failure to attach. Your response ignored both questions, you just gave an irrelevant answer to Jim. I explained what Jim was asking, and repeated Tigher's request for the URLs. Instead, you come back hours later, with an answer you got somewhere else, which works, but seems like "drastic overkill" to me. I suppose since you were not attached and had nothing to lose, it was the simplest way of correcting a client_state.xml problem, but... I'm not even sure of that, not knowing who/where you got the answer. If you can give us a link to that thread, then we might be able to see if it's a "BOINC bug", to be reported and fixed, or just something we the volunteers should know about that happens on occasion.

I hope you aren't upset with us here for failing to give you the answer, and I hope you understand why we were unable to. We never got past "step one" of identifying the problem.
