What did you upgrade from?

Do you have any other problems with the system?

Have you run all the updates? There's been quite a few fixes to KDE4...

Second thought is that you have some unusual combination from your 'upgrade'. A clean re-install may be the quickest and easiest fix. Obviously, backup your home data first!

Or are you suffering hardware overheating or a PSU overload? Have you cleaned the dust out of your PC?

Good luck,
Martin

(Mandriva 2009.0 and all is fine with Boinc)
