I moved a 9800gtx+ board from an Intel platform (Vista 64 home premium) to an AMD platform with a new install of Vista 64 ultimate. I already knew the 9800gtx would work in the AMD because it was formerly running XP Pro and I had crunched a few gpugrid units two months ago. I then took the 9800 home and put it in my intel system.

I cannot get the CUDA device to be recognized under vista. Tried everything: Driver 180.48, 180.60, 180.84. Then tried 6.4.2 and 6.5.0. Currently I have 180.60 and 6.4.2.

The cuda device is recognized by the CUDA SDK "query device" sample program. It just is not recognized by boinc. Click here for picture: http://swri.info/images/vista64_amd.png
Note on the far right the messages says no cuda device present. I ran the Device Query on the left and it clearly shows my 9800gtx+

However, I do not know if the Device Query was built using CUDA 1.1, 2.0 or 2.1. Even so, there is definately a bug somewhere. The mombo supports PCIe and when running XP Pro the 9800gtx is immediately recognized by BOINC.

In case you are wondering, I did not use the protected mode ie: BOINC is not running as a service as is the common mistake in vista. My other (intel) home system is getting a model 280.

The mombo is tyan S2892 and it has 2 slots and the problem occurs in both slots: The SDK's Device Query recognizes the CUDA but BOINC does not.

thanks for looking

And you are really sure BOINC isn't installed as a service (protected mode)?
Can you post the fist few (15-20) lines of the messages tab after you started BOINC?

[edit]Nevermind... I just saw the pic you linked... Do you see the line "runing as a daemon" in your messages? Your BOINC is installed as a service!

yea - that caught my attention earlier, but it shows up as daemon no matter how I install/uninstall it. It is not listed as a service in local service nor do I see it using regedit. So how do I get rid of it short of reinstalling vista.

correction: It does show up in msconfig as a service even after a reinstall using the recommended procedure. I know I originally installed it as a service because it did not have the CUDA card when I put vista in. Seems it is stuck to where I can uninstall the files from the drive, but I cannot remove the service definition.

OK - thanks! I am on the path to fixing the problem. I used sc delete boinc to get rid of the service. I suspect I can create a startup link so it runs when I log in.

Not sure why the uninstall failed to remove the service.

You could try to
- uninstall BOINC
- open regedit and set the ENABLEPROTECTEDAPPLICATIONEXECUTION key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley/BOINC Setup to 0
- install BOINC again

I also have a ENABLEPROTECTEDAPPLICATIONEXECUTION2 key in my registry, maybe you will also have both because you tried a few of the newer BOINC versions. I'm not sure wich key is used by BOINC 6.4.2, but on my Vista 64 computer both are set to 0.
