I'm having a problem upgrading some of my clients from v5.10.45 to v6.4.5 and I don't see this issue mentioned on the forum yet . . .

During the install I'm getting a dialog which says "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." Then, there is a "Use source" pulldown box which is populated with a value like "C:\Windows\Downloaded Installations\{7CFB....}. When I check this {7CFB....} directory I find it was created today and contains the BOINC.msi file.

Most of my clients upgraded fine. They consist of 1 WinME, 2 XP Home SP3, 4 XP Pro SP3 and 3 Vista Home SP1 systems. All are Intel systems running P4 processors with hyper-threaded cpus to dual core cpus. None of these systems runs a NVIDIA chip.

The clients which have the problem consist of 1 XP Home SP3, 1 XP Pro SP3 and 1 Vista Ultimate system. Again, all are Intel systems varying from a hyper-threaded cpu to a quad-core cpu. Two of these systems runs a NVIDIA chip but the quad-core system does not.

I am running the same install file on all machines and there seems to be no consistency on which operating systems are problematic.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I try to keep all systems running the same version of the Boinc client.

See this FAQ which has various ways to fix the problem of a corrupt BOINC uninstaller, which is what your problem is.

Thanks for the reply Jord. The directions in the FAQ read:

"Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Run that on your computer. The corrupt BOINC version shows up as either BOINC.msi or as a corrupt icon .msi (it'll be the top most option). Click on it to select it, then click Remove and Exit. You may need to reboot your computer now."

But, when I run the utility the only Boinc entry shown says "Boinc [5.10.45]". It does not say "BOINC.msi" nor does a corrupt icon .msi show up in the list as the directions indicate. Is the Boinc [5.10.45] the entry I should remove or does that entry indicate a non-corrupt installation?

You're trying to remove the BOINC 5.10.45 version, so if that entry shows up in the cleaner utility, then that's the one to choose.

The installer of the new BOINC package uses the uninstaller of the old package to uninstall that old package. If for some reason the old installer package got corrupt, you run into these problems. The other way is to reinstall 5.10.45 (with a repair install), before uninstalling it.

I was able to resolve the problem on 2 of the machines by running the v5.10.45 install program, selecting the repair option and then running the v6.4.5 install program.

After these same steps on the 3rd machine and rebooting it told me "A reboot is required in order for Boinc to run properly. Please reboot your computer and try again.". The message repeated each time I rebooted in response to this message. This occurred 5 times or so before I gave up. At this point I uninstalled v6.4.5, rebooted and re-installed v6.4.5. Everything seems ok for now.

Thanks for your help Jord.
