After looking at the 82c core 0 temp on my Q6700 I decided to do something about it.

First of all, I read where I can subtract 5c from the speedfan results since it reports diode temp and the 71 degree intel rating is for the cpu case. Well, 82-5 was still above 71. The other cores were (as I recall) 77, 73 and 69. Core 0 was always high.

Anyway, I spend an hour stareing at the Big Typhoon model made by Thermaltake before ponying up $60 USD.

It made a huge difference, I should have got that two months ago when I upgraded my core2 duo to quad. Here are the temps from speedfan while running 4 boinc projects (5 includeing the GPU one)

Here are the temps literally 10 seconds after I put boinc into idle mode.

I do not have an image of my original temps, but core 0 was invariable 81-82 centigrade and would drop to 67c when idle

Unfortunately, gpuz shows my 9800gtx+ at 67c but to the touch it seems much hotter. I put a fan on the case lid just above the GPU but it does not seem to have any effect. I have not taken the case off the XFX board, but i am sure there are no heat pipes.

The Big Tyhpoon has 6 heat pipes. Motherboard is intel D965WH with builtin video disabled. I opted for the Big Typhoon when I found it came with a backup plate assembly. The less expensive thermaltake had the same nylon type insert that came with the stock intel fan.

The latest version of speedfan, 4.37, can identify nvidia sensors and shows GPU temp's. Seems to be better than gpu-z as far as reporting sensor information. The previous version that I posted about earlier did not identify the gpu and named it "temp" instead.

Hi Mate,

Personally I don't trust these temperature monitoring programmes.

Here's my Speedfan on Idle

Notice my CPU temp is -64ºC, never knew I had built-in Cryogenics :)

These are my GPU temps while running 2 x CUDA apps

And before you laugh, I have 1 x 120mm and 3 x 80mm Fans blowing in cooler air into my case and 1 x 120mm Fan Extracting the heat.

There's only so much heat you can dissipate when running everything @ 100%

You can buy aftermarket coolers for your GPU's but by opening the standard cases and removing coolers and fans to add aftermarket ones will in effect invalidate any warranty.

You might try Rivatuner http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=rivatuner which will allow you to control your fan speed.

RealTemp 3.00 made by the same people as GPU-z cand be found at http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/

My two 8800GTS OC BFG's have a lifetime warranty, they've never been overclocked by me and so I'm not worried if they run hot.

My case now sounds pretty loud with 5 case fans, 1 CPU Fan and 2 GPU fans running simultaneously, but that's the price you pay for BOINCing

The one labelled Core is your CPU. SpeedFan finds all sensors it can and labels them as best it can. That's why you can relabel them using configure, even disable those that makes no sense at all (like that sensor that shows -64, and any showing <15). Doesn't always work as intended. If your MB came with a program from the vendor to show the same things, you can simply use that to find out which sensors work correctly and what to rename them to in SpeedFan. Or maybe someone else already did that so you just need to download it (Info tab -> Get config-button).

The difference in CoreX temps between SpeedFan and RealTemp is diffence in TJ Max. Did you calibrate RealTemp? Yours shows TJ Max is 90, which IIRC is what Intel said it is for a Q6600, although reallife tests from many ppl shows it should be 100 for 65nm and 95 for 45nm. You can change TJ Max in SpeedFan too. Then they'll show the same temps for the core's. Notice that RealTemp and SpeedFan don't agree on which core is which. I had that too, but renamed in SpeedFan, so now they agree which core is which ;)

In any case, in your shoes I would definitely buy a better CPU-cooler...

I tried that just the once got me a nice Tuniq Tower 120 http://www.tuniq.com.tw/Cooler%20Info/Tower-120.htm

Worked fine for around half a day then overstressed my mobo :(

Cost me all in all around £200 to buy the above CPU Cooler, (Carriage, Cost of Cooler, Cost of new Mobo) so I think I'll wait until my new mobo warranty expires lol

Then I might be tempted to upgrade my CPU Cooler, until then stock Intel Cooler it is lol

Next stop RAM Cooler, as I took mine out today and they were extremely hot to the touch.

Thanks for the update on SpeedFan, but the upgrade is gonna have to wait
