I installed the lattest BOINC client on a Windows XP Home Edition system and some strange things happened : First of all, some funny fake users (boinc_xxx) appeared in the Task Manager, and I didn't have the rights anymore to create files or directories under my D:\Program Files\ directory where I had installed it (couldn't even change the name of existing ones). It seems that it also affected my D:\Documents and Settings\ directory since my automatic data backup procedure wouldn't backup many files anymore. I had to deinstall this version to gain full control again over my directories, and since then my automatic backup procedure works fine !!! Any idea what the problem is or could be ??? Since then, I can't compute any projects anymore, sorry !!! Thanks...

Those 'funny fake user accounts' are made by BOINC for it to run its applications and the project applications under. Windows will make a new directory structure for the Boinc_Master account.

A reboot (or log off/log on) is needed for BOINC to be able to use these files and directories. That's a Windows thing.

These accounts will only show up when you installed BOINC as a service, or in other words, if you used the default installation method. See Service install = Protected Application Execution mode, the sticky thread here in the forums.

If you do not want to use this form of installation, restart the BOINC installer and on the third screen in, click the Advanced button, uncheck the Protected Application Execution option, check "Allow all users to control BOINC Manager", click OK, and continue the installation. Then you'll install in the old single user/multi user way, where BOINC runs under your account.
