Hi,

I searched for an FAQ or guide to how to move the data directory, and came up with nothing. I'm using 6.2.19, and would like to move the data directory from C: to D: I'm assuming it's a fairly straight-forward procedure? It would be nice if this was built into the BOINC Manager at some point.

Thanks!

Thanks. Yes, I did see that FAQ, however it seems geared towards older (version 5) clients. I'm assuming that since I have the latest client, and a separate data directory, I can do the following:

1. Shut down BOINC
2. Update the location of the data directory for BOINC
3. Move the data directory
4. Ensure the data directory has the proper permissions set

For 2., the instructions suggest using cc_config.xml. I don't seem to have that file in either my BOINC or my BOINC data directories. How does BOINC currently know where the data directory is? (registry?) Can I simply update it there?

For 4., all the FAQ says is:

Make sure that the BOINC Data directory and subdirectories have full read/write permission for your user group. To do so, right click on the \BOINC Data\ directory in the tree, Properties, Security.

What permissions should be set? I tried right-clicking on my current Data directory, going to Properties, but there is no Security tab. (Windows XP Pro SP3) Does this mean I don't have to worry about permissions?

The simplest way is to uninstall Boinc, locate and copy or move the Boinc Data folder to the wanted location. Reinstall Boinc using the Advanced setting to point the installer the new location of the Data folder. That all there is to do with Win XP.

Yes, the location is stored in the registry.

To move either or both program / data directories:

1: Use Windows uninstall to remove BOINC. Windows runs an uninstall script, which moves the data directory back to the same location as the program directory.

2) Re-install BOINC, use Advanced to get to where you can select the location for either or both.

3) Select the locations that you want. This will separate the prog & data directories again.

Thanks Les. Worked perfectly and very simply; didn't have to fiddle or manually do anything. Only way this could be improved is to have a tool within the BOINC Manager to simply move the data to a new location, but the uninstall / install is pretty fast and painless.
