Hello all,

I use boinc 6.2.19 on Wdws XP.
I calculate, eeh no, my computer does :-) for malariacontrol, climateprediction and Leidenclassical.
I fix 40% or less to keep the fan quiet.
I regularly see my computer overriding the max qty of CPU i allocate and it seems to me that this transmission_155.exe process i see appearing in the task manager list is consuming 50%, aside from the normal task which is also listed there.

Does anybody see it also ? No google answer at all on that... Strange.

BOINC's throttling function will suspend calculations and resume them according to the amount of CPU time you set in the preference. It will not give a maximum of that percentage continuously to the science applications running under BOINC.

See this FAQ for a more precise answer on why this is done.

At 40% you'll see in BOINC Manager that any task running at that time will suspend and continue, per this frequency: 1 second run, 1 second idle, 1 second run, 2 seconds idle, 1 second run, etc.

Yes, it's one of the malaria applications.

A pity it does not respect the parameters (%of cpu usage/time) we set.
Visible through task manager that it takes e.g. 50% more or less constantly wheareas it should oscillate between x and y% to get a mean value respecting our choice.
Is it a bug ? That's the question.

Ask at the Malaria forums. They made the application.

General question: Isn't that the Optimizer application and doesn't it run with a wrapper?

@ageless & Dagorath:
Which link in FAQ page were you thinking about please ? The FAQ page you point at contains hundreds of other links & I did not see one related.
Could be my eyes... :-)
thanks

Generally: I was indeed thinking about the throttle that goes up to 50+10(when you set use of CPU time to 10). I'll go and ask malariacontrol team for information.

Thanks for all !

You're looking at my signature which points to the BOINC FAQs.

The Malaria Optimizer application runs through a wrapper program called transmission_155.exe

The Optimizer application is written in Java which natively doesn't run under BOINC, so it is using a wrapper program which takes care of the communications between the BOINC client and the Optimizer application. If you do not want to run Optimizers, you can opt out of them through the Malaria project preferences:

Run test applications? Yes
Run malariacontrol simulation application Yes
Run malariacontrol test application Yes
Run map predictor application No
Run optimizer application No

The above settings will give you test applications, but won't give you Optimizers.
