Hi,

I installed Boinc v. 6.2.19 "on top of" v.5.10.45 on both my computers. One of them gave no problem at all, but the other gave quite some trouble.
In the end I think the problem was the data folder of MindModeling that was too stubborn to let itself be moved for whathetever unknow reason. I removed the folder myself before trying again and after that things went fine. But unfortunately this time I hadn't checked the "Protect Application execution" box. I think the service option was not the problem though, I had it both checked and unchecked several times before when the installation went wrong as well, but then I noticed the installation started to roll back every time after all project folders were moved except for the MindModeling folder.

Now I want to install again with the service option checked, but I'm afraid to loose the current work (o.a. a long Orbit and a CPND WU) when I uninstall Boinc first.

So my question is if I can maybe re-install v.6.2.19 on top of the current installation without removing it first, or do I really need to uninstall it first in order to get the service option working?
If I need to uninstall first, will I not loose any of my current WU's? I'm reluctant to just give it a try, as I just don't know what will happen when I just press the uninstall button.

Thanks for any advice,
Bart

If you make a backup copy of the BOINC data directory then it won't matter if the uninstaller deletes all your work because you can delete the data directory the installer creates and restore the backup...

To be on the safe side, you should disable your network (pull cable?), while uninstalling/installing/restoring backup, so that the project server doesn't get aware if something goes wrong.

I tested V6 a month or so back, by installing and then uninstalling, specifying a different location each time for the data, as well as using the default.

After each new install, I checked my climate models for a while, and then made a backup, restored it and checked that for a while.
There were no problems during this time; the data folder(s) got moved back and forth by the installer/uninstaller OK, and the models kept working OK.

Finally, I put the programs on a D:\ drive, and the data on an E:\ drive and left them there.

Previous version was 5.10.30, which was just overwritten.
During the testing the network was disabled in the Manager.

I don't know about MindModeling because I only run climate models.
But it sounds as though the program had some MM file(s) locked at the time.

My new backup instructions are here.

Hi again,

I did try to re-install Boinc with service mode again the day before yesterday, but things seemed to have gone wrong. Unfortunately yesterday I had no time to experiment, but today I've given it a try again.

This is what I did and what happened.
I had made a backup of the BOINC data folder. Maybe this is where things went wrong, I can't tell, but after uninstalling, I removed the BOINC folder from program files as well, as there were still leftovers from the previous installation (v.5), after I compared it with my oher computer. I rebooted and after installing with service mode and restoring the backup of the data folder, I rebooted again. After Boinc started again there was a problem. Sometimes it connected to the localhost, showing the tasks in the screen, but no task started. After a minute waiting I got the message Boinc couldn't connect to the localhost. Most of the times though, Boinc couldn't connect to the localhost from start and the WU's didn't show up at all. Today I tried to re-install again (as I mentioned above) but the same happened again.
So I tried to install Boinc again, but now without the service mode. I removed both BOINC folders and restored the backup data folder after installation again, and now things seem to be fine again. Boinc immediately connects to the localhost and starts crunching, seemingly without loss of work or any harm done to them.

I really don´t understand what went wrong. Things seem to be fine now, so unless somewone has a pretty good idea what could have gone wrong (and a solution of course), I think it's probably better to keep it this way.
I didn't disconnect from the internet though, as I only read that after I tried to re-install with service mode again. Would it be worth it to try to install again with service mode again, but now without i-connection?

Thanks for your advice so far.
Bart

Make sure the shortcut to BOINC Manager points to the new BOINC directory.

@ Dagorath
I don't remember to have set up the permissions or login account in Windows differently on this computer than on the other one, where the installation with service mode went right from the first time. But still someone might have a better idea about it, or how I should check it, so I better wait for any suggestions about that.

@Ageless
When I had it running under service mode, Boinc started without me interfering. But now you mention, there is a shortcut in my startup folder in the start menu. It has a "/s" behind it in the destination line, while the old one on my desktop hasn't, but the rest is the same. I used the default folders while installing, so they shouldn't have changed. And it's there in the starup folder of my other computer as well (with the /s), and that doesn't give complications so far.

Should I try to install service mode again, but then first delete the shortcuts, or would that be useless?

Thanks again,
Bart
