OK, so I just installed ubuntu 8.04 on a G4 PowerMac 800DP as the only OS. My BOINC version appears to be 5.10.45, but under boincstats it says 5.4.9. I am having a couple of BOINC-related problems:

1. I tried connecting to boincstats.com, but whenever I select 'Tools-->Synchronize with boincstats BAM', I get a message: "unable to add host to BAM, please try again later." Yet, when I log in to BAM, the computer appears under the host list.

2. For every project, whenever I click "update", I get the following message: "Message from server: platform 'powerpc-linux-gnu' not found." HOWEVER, for some projects (SETI, Sztaki) it did appear to download the basic project application, even though EVERY project gives the above error message and defers communication for 24 hours.

Any advice? This is my very first powerpc platform.

Projects only support certain "platforms".
The message indicates that the project in question doesn't support "powerpc-linux-gnu".

I get this error message for EVERY project, even those known to support the PowerPC.

OK, after a bit more research, I think I may have a platform/OS combination that is not supported by *any* BOINC applications.

Are there any Linux-on-Mac users out there who can help me get some projects running? Am I going to have to do some command-line stuff and install unofficial project applications? I'd really appreciate some guidance here.

Look for a project with an open source application, for example SETI, and compile the source yourself. If you can do that then you can use the anonymous platform mechanism to get the server to send work to your G4 even though the project may not support G4. If the work units crunch and verify then you're in business.

I'm afraid that is beyond my skill level, at least in the broad way you phrased it. I am hoping someone can give me some easy instructions to get the machine crunching units so that I can leave it alone.
