I have a Astropulse Wu running on my PS3 Box that has been running for 17 hour's now without switching over to the Yoyo Wu that's been waiting to run. Both Projects have an equal Resource Share & my Preferences are set to switch between Projects every 240 Minutes ... ???

Yes and? Some APs hang. Try an exit and a restart of BOINC and post about it on the Seti forums. :-)

And why isn't it switching between the 2 Wu's ? As far as I can tell it isn't hung, the Progress % keeps going up as it should.

I'll post about it at Seti though as much as I hate to have anything to do with the Forums over there ...

EDF?

Or ask the author of the science application - so far as I know, Astropulse hasn't been released for PS3 by Berkeley.

They show where to get the Application from though and they send you the Astropulse Wu's for a PS3 whether Berkely has released it or not for a PS3 ... :)

Did the Astropulse task checkpoint at all during the run? This would also be a reason not to switch at all.

I suppose you've some 6.3.x on the PS3, so you could simply check "checkpoint cpu time" / "current cpu time" on the task's Properties window.

Also possible that it uses a wrapper, which then means that AP tasks run from start to finish without letting go of the CPU. Wrapper apps don't checkpoint (that easily).

Hi Pepo, I'm using the Client the PS3Grid [v5.10.6] puts out or has you download to run the Astropulse Wu & Yoyo Wu's to, haven't got a SIMAP Wu on the PS3 yet so I don't know for sure if it works for them or not yet.

You've lost me on this though > "so you could simply check "checkpoint cpu time" / "current cpu time" on the task's Properties window" I don't see no Property Window or an Option to show Graphics either. So I don't know if the Wu has checpointed or not yet.

I don't see no Wrapper Process in the System Monitor Window for the Astropulse Wu, I see some for the Yoyo Wu's though when those Wu's are running.

There was no Property Window in the 6.2.x line yet.

But you can still take a look at the client_state.xml file, look for <checkpoint_cpu_time> tags, they are enclosed in <active_task> block with <project_master_url> and <result_name> underneath.

Or even better, look for your Astropulse's result name - there are some 5-6 matches and just one is in the <active_task> block. You will see there <checkpoint_cpu_time> and <current_cpu_time>, these are the same 6.3.x Manager is displaying.

Let us know both times. and some time later again.

Pepo, I don't see anything in the client_state.xml file that indicates a <checkpoint_cpu_time> or even a <active_task> block, I checked it a few times & if it's there I don't see either ... ???

It's @ 30 Hours now without switching Projects so I'm just assuming it's going to run to it's finish like Ageless said even though I don't see a Wrapper running in the System Monitor or in the Project Folder or Slot folder for the Astro Wu ...

Weird, I believe you're running BOINC, aren't you? ;-)

On my home computer, there is just this one active task (PrimeGrid, but the same is true for any other project's crunched task) in the set of active tasks, yours should look like this (please ignore the leading dots, I've added them for formatting (damned white-space stealing!)):

<active_task_set>
<active_task>
. . <project_master_url>http://www.primegrid.com/</project_master_url>
. . <result_name>psp_sr2sieve_9156735_1</result_name>
. . <active_task_state>1</active_task_state>
. . <app_version_num>102</app_version_num>
. . <slot>0</slot>
. . <checkpoint_cpu_time>10392.593750</checkpoint_cpu_time>
. . <fraction_done>0.829686</fraction_done>
. . <current_cpu_time>10392.593800</current_cpu_time>
. . <swap_size>72896512.000000</swap_size>
. . <working_set_size>74059776.000000</working_set_size>
. . <working_set_size_smoothed>74059776.000000</working_set_size_smoothed>
. . <page_fault_rate>0.000000</page_fault_rate>
</active_task>
</active_task_set>

Not exactly. client_state.xml contains just a snapshot of these values at the checkpoint interval, thus they seem to be nearly identical. BTW, what is the "Write to disk every ..." value for your system? To be found in global_prefs.xml like <disk_interval>650</disk_interval>.

I don't see a Wrapper running in the System Monitor or in the Project Folder or Slot folder for the Astro Wu ...

No, Astropulse really does not use wrapper, it runs as a single application.

Pepo, here's the section of the client_state.xml that pertains to the Astrpulse Wu <active_task_set> it was at the end of the file where I didn't look the first few times ... Write to disk time is 60 seconds ...

Translated to "human language":

checkpoint_cpu_time . . 107436.00 . . 1+05:50:36.0
fraction_done . . . . . 0.19873 . . . 19.873%
current_cpu_time .. . . 107445.20 . . 1+05:50:45.2 (written 9 CPU seconds after a checkpoint)

checkpoint_cpu_time . . 110187.20 . . 1+06:36:27.2
fraction_done . . . . . 0.203656 .. . 20.366%
current_cpu_time .. . . 110189.30 . . 1+06:36:29.3 (written 2 CPU seconds after another checkpoint)

The AP task is clearly checkpointing (and I believe you can freely pause it or restart the client to check/force the task switching), so back to the initial question: why is the client not preempting it?

As Richard asked: isn't it running with high priority? What's the "To completion" and "Report deadline" value for both AP and Yoyo tasks?

The AP task is clearly checkpointing

Yes, I thought myself when I seen the 2 sets of data ...

As Richard asked: isn't it running with high priority?

No, it isn't nor has it ever been running in High Priority Mode that I know of ...

What's the "To completion" and "Report deadline" value for both AP and Yoyo tasks?

Astropulse Wu = 433 hr's To completion with a 10/15/2008 Deadline
Yoyo ..... Wu = 141 hr's To Completion with a 10/02/2008 Deadline

The Astropulse Wu started out with a 725 hr's To Completion Time but has since dropped to the 433 hr's after only running 38:30:00 hr's. My estimates now are for it to finish around 150 hr's as it seems to run fairly Linear since it started.

The Yoyo Wu can run any amount of Time it seems, I've seen them run 25 min's all the way up to 15 hr's so far. I asked about it in the Yoyo Forum & their reply was the Wu's can take as much as 40 hr's to do, but I'm not sure if that was for a regular PC or a PS3 ...

725 hours from the time of your first post opening this thread takes us to 14:59 on 16 October 2008. You don't give us the time of the deadline, but this estimate is definitely past it. You were in EDF ('panic' - high priority) mode, whether you knew it or not.

Now that the 'to completion' estimate has reduced, there will come a transition point where BOINC can revert to round robin scheduling. That transition point will depend on your cache (specifically: connect interval) setting. YoYo should then start to run: it will have a lot of debt to pay off, so it will run continuously for a long time: and it is entirely possible and plausible that it will run back past the transition point so that Astropulse restarts in EDF again for another stint, even before the debt is paid off. Rinse and repeat. All good clean fun.

Your probably right Richard, the BOINC Manager just isn't showing it running in EDF Mode though because of the Version of the Client and or the Manager I suspect ... :)

The Yoyo Wu has took over for the last 12.5 hr's, I hadn't looked at the PS3 all day and just noticed that, so it's getting it's turn to run too I guess. Hopefully the Yoyo Wu will finish before the Astro Wu decides to start running again or it might be another 40 hr's before it runs again ... :)

I think the more plausible explanations are, in no particular order:

1) wifey's nose left a big smudge on your eyeglasses when she gave you a kiss for taking her for lunch and the smudge blurred your vision, maybe practice your approach or just remove spectacles on such occasions
...

ROTFLMAO !!!
