Boinc 6.2.18, Seti@home, AMD quad core, 4GB RAM, Vista SP1
Any information on why/how boinc may cause the system to hangup & reboot? This seems to be the problem app (I turned off the screensaver mode.) Reducing the resources to <= 90% and only running on 3 out of 4 cores seems to help (time will tell.) Any solutions would be welcome so I can get the most out of my new PC. TIA.

Sounds like the CPU may be over heating or maybe some other part of the system (Memory, NorthBridge Chip etc), if you don't already have a good CPU Temp Monitor then try to get one, I can't recommend a AMD CPU Monitor as I run strictly Intel's but if you do a little Google searching you should be able to come up with one ...

BOINC rarely causes system crash, especially with the screensaver turned off. If it's happening regularly then it suggests hardware problems. The science apps that run under BOINC definitely test the hardware.

1) install temperature monitoring software, as PoorBoy already suggested.
2) run Memtest for 24 hours to check for defective RAM.
3) run Windows ScanDisk utility to check for disk problems

Your computer is new so it's suspect. If you have not performed the above tests already then you should do so before going any further

Temp is AOK, Disk is AOK, memtest is AOK. Doesn't seem to be hardware. Does anyone have any experience with Vista? Currently running 3 of 4 processors. Same problem.

I'm also experiencing a system hangup with Vista and BOINC 6.2.18. I have an AMD Quad Core Phenom 2.2 GHz processor with 3GB of RAM and Vista SP1 32 bit version. I'm only using 2 of the cores and have the resources set to 80%. I also do not run the screensaver. I'm running several different projects and haven't been able to pinpoint which project causes the hangup. I unistalled 6.2.18, reinstalled 5.10.45 and have no problems since. My system never rebooted it just would hang and I would have to power down to get it running again.

I hope my information helps out a little,

Warren

I assume with "Reducing the resources to <= 90%" you mean the preference setting "Use at most XX percent of CPU time". Did you try to run with 100% and 3 of 4 cores? Until now, I only heard of "cpu throttling" sometimes causing frequent restarts of WUs, but one never knows :-)
