Humm. the new .18 version now run as a deamon.
the problem is when I close the BOINC manager, the tasks continue to run due to the deamon. I have to suspend them before and then close BOINC manager. But they stay in memory :(

In the version .16 , closing BOINC stopped everything.

This is the Windows way of doing things, most of it will work the same on Linux/the Mac. I assume you will know how to do it.
To stop BOINC 6.x when running as a service
Ways to stop BOINC 6.2.x when running as a service:

1) BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Shut down connected client->OK->Cancel followed by BOINC Manager->File->Exit.

2) BOINC Manager->File->Exit followed by Windows Start button->Run, type net stop boinc, click OK.

3) BOINC Manager->File->Exit followed by Windows Start button->Run, type services.msc, click OK. Find BOINC in the Services applet. Right click on it, choose Stop from the drop-down menu.

To start BOINC and the service again, just go Start->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager link.

Yhea, I know how to do it all, but going to the first step:

" BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Shut down connected client->OK->Cancel followed by BOINC Manager->File->Exit."

it shut down the boinc deamon and remove my rosetta and world community grid
programs from the memory too, that's all I wanted. Re-Running the BOINC manager start
back the daemon. So only the first step is important and needed.

Thank you for the reply, it fixed my worries.

I have a blank screen coming on 3 minutes after the boink screensaver. boink still runs, but can't be seen. When I try to re-acess the computer, the blank screen dissappears showing a Seti@home graphic screen that is not moving. I can't get the screen to let me in. ctr-alt-del doesn't do anything. I have to press the restart button to get into the computer.

The Manager message says "suspending network activity - user is active"
The computer was hung up, and I couldn't get in.

I don't have and answer but I have a similar problem. It looks like BOINC gives me the blue screen of death in Vista several times a day. I started a different screen saver and haven't experienced the BSOD so far and it's been about 8 hours.

Arthur, Brian and Dan, please leave behind:

- Which OS you're using.
- Which BOINC version.
- How you installed BOINC (Protected or not protected mode).
- Which projects you are attached to.
- What make and model of video card you use. (plus if possible driver version, Directx version etc.)

I'm experiencing the same loss of graphics since I updated to 6.2.18. It's an AMD Athlon 64 with NVIDIA GEForce 7800GT running XP SP3 (although it was the same on SP2). I have the latest graphic drivers installed.
I see the 'BOINC screensaver loading' message when the screensaver kicks in, but no project graphics. I run SETI, Rosetta, Einstein, Climateprediction, Malaria Control, QMC, LHC and Spinhenge.

It seems to be fine on the other two machines on my network (both AMD/NVIDIA set ups), so I don't know what's going on...!

Has everyone read the FAQ page, linked from the BOINC Download page? It explains the difference in how graphics work in V6 compared to V5.

Yes, I think I understand the FAQ and the issues with v6 and graphics. Some projects have not yet updated to v6 and so may not show graphics. However, on my other two machines (one is running XP SP3/BOINC 2.6.14; the laptop is running Vista Home premium/BOINC 6.2.18), both are showing graphics for SETI and Einstein. Other projects show BOINC logo and 'Computing for...' project details when running.
This machine, running XP SP3/BOINC 6.2.18, is not showing graphics for any project, and the BOINC logo only appears when it is starting up, then the screen goes blank.
I have just uninstalled and reinstalled as standard (protected), but no change. Surely I should at least see graphics for SETI and Einstein as I do on the other two machines?

It may be a problem with the video driver try updating them. On the other hand the ATI chipset is still problematic as far I know.

As I mentioned in my first post, I have an NVIDIA card, running the latest update.

I think I may have identified my particular problem (although not solved it) - This BOINC is busy crunching CPDN data just now, but only v5 projects. I've read elsewhere that there is an issue with CPDN not displaying graphics for these in v6, so perhaps this is what's going on?

Hello Jord,
I am having the same problem : Screensaver starts OK (Seti); but when moving mouse, screensaver freezes; Ctl-alt-del doesn't work - but mouse can still move cursor.

More weirdness (unexpected):
After everything was frozen a timer started the screensaver again.
BUT it had what looked like an out-of-sync bar passing vertically across the screen.
THIS time, when a mashed a button, 2/3 is screen save stayed on and top 1/3
was a mish-mash of seti graph and Desktop icons moving all over.
I *assume* some video pointer or video mem got trashed.
This time several ctl-alt-del did get through and a shutdown was executed.

OS - XP with latest SP and updates
Boinc version: 6.2.18
Mode: Not protected - accessible by all users.
Video card: ATI Mobility Radeon X300
Video driver: (via dxdiag) ati2dvag.dll - main driver
DirectX:(via dxdiag) 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
video Mem - 64 MB
DDI version - 9 or higher

Any ideas?
THANKS in advance..
Jay

More data...
I rebooted and did not start Boincmanager and let the screen saver kick in.
The Boinc Logo was shown - bouncing around as expected.
(The screensaver had the expected message that Boinc was not running...)

Key strokes return expected results -
screensaver exits normally; back to working desktop.

Hi

I've had boinc in various versions over the past couple of years on my notebook working fine.

I just installed the latest version 6.2.19 on both my notebook and my desktop system. Both running Windows XP current SP & patches.

The notebook is working as normal. Screensaver when I am idle and goes away when I move the mouse or hit a key.

My desktop is not so lucky and I am seeing the screensaver come up and not go away. The system hangs or goes into a loopy loop and I wait 10 minutes with it locked and then reset the system. have tried different preference settings including comparing all with my notebook but they seem ok.

Video card is a Radeon 9200 SE.

Boinc detects the following:
25/09/2008 6:09:50 PM||Processor: 1 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9]
25/09/2008 6:09:50 PM||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx
25/09/2008 6:09:50 PM||OS: Microsoft Windows XP: Professional x86 Editon, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00)
25/09/2008 6:09:50 PM||Memory: 2.00 GB physical, 3.35 GB virtual
25/09/2008 6:09:50 PM||Disk: 111.80 GB total, 31.80 GB free

Connecting only Seti@home project.

Suggestions ?

Thanks.

What sort of SETI task is running on your desktop? SETI has two at the moment - MB (short), and Astropulse (very long). There has been a reported bug in Astropulse "whereby the Astropulse screensaver would sometimes freeze": a new version designed to fix this is in the final stages of Beta testing.
