BOINC.exe needs to be able to connect to the internet on port 80 and 443
BOINC.exe and BOINCMGR.exe need to be able to communicate with each other on port 31416

Make sure you didn't set up a proxy if you don't need one.
And do make sure that if you are connecting to the internet with a router, that ports 80 and 443 are also open in there (stealth).

If this all still doesn't help, you can try to connect using HTTP 1.0
To do so, navigate to your BOINC Data directory and make a file called cc_config.xml (best done with Notepad, but make sure it doesn't save the file with the .txt extension. If it does, rename it so it only has the .xml extension)

In the cc_config.xml file, add the following lines:
<cc_config>
<options>
<http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
</options>
</cc_config>

Save it to the Data directory.
Next open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Advanced->Read config file.

Then try to connect to the projects again.
Apropos of nothing, which projects are you trying to reach?

Could you try to update to BOINC 6.2.18 and see if that still gives you the same problem? Also tell where from you have this problem, is it home or work/school? If work or school... are you allowed to use BOINC on the work or school computer?

Same problem here. For me it seems to be related to OS X. I run BOINC on Linux and Windows and Linux on the same computer. Does not work. Last version to work was 6.1.0. None after that.

HTTP_1_0 does not help.

Any suggestions?

Message 20187 - Posted: 12 Sep 2008, 14:08:00 UTC

Since my update from version 5.8.x something, I get the same problem only when on my network at work. As soon as I get home or on the wireless from work, it's working fine.

I changed nothign nor did the admins did. We use a proxy at work but I have a ISA client on the station so no need to any kind of configuration.

What did change in BOINC so it'd stop working ? Thanks for the help

We use a proxy at work

Did you tell BOINC to use the proxy? (BM->Advanced view->Options)

Else please leave some relevant messages from your messages tab.

Message 20205 - Posted: 12 Sep 2008, 23:05:47 UTC

Greetings,

I also seem to be having a similar problem. On a new Ubuntu 8.0.4 machine,
I installed BOINC 6.2.15 today and Seti@home. When trying to run it, I'm
getting messages like
03:50:08 PM: Error: Cannot get the official hostname (error 110: Connection timed out)
every 30 seconds or so.

I've tried Advanced->Select Computer... to set localhost, but that does not
seem to help. The messages continue. The lower right of the GUI says
Connected to localhost (6.2.15)

In addition, the application's response is exceeding slow (on a new very fast
dual core box with 4 Gbytes RAM), and it greys out for about 20 seconds every
30 seconds or so.

I haven't seen this behavior on earlier versions running on Fedora 1 Linux or WindowsXP.

Please also replay to my email acct: howard@cohensw.com

Thanks,
howard

This is a different message, it's not the BOINC Manager cannot connect to the client (BOINC), but that the project can't find a hostname for your computer.
Check in your \etc\hosts file if you have any network identification name for your host.

Try to set it so it shows like this:
127.0.0.1 yourcomputershostname localhost

Then restart BOINC and try again.

OK, my apologies. The issue seemed to be confusion in the /etc/hosts file which had an incorrect designation of teh machine name vs its static IP number.

Everything seems to be working well now, with Seti@home & einstein@home.

Cheers,
howard

Is there yet any solution to the problem:

"BOINC can't access internet - ..."

I cannot believe this is only affects so few people.

If I can help with error messages...let me know!

Cheers,

BOINC 6.1.0 works fine, any version above does not (on the very same system: OS X 10.5.5). There is no proxy server and I have tried different places for internet access.
BOINCs from other systems on the same computer work fine.

Perhaps Ageless could ask Charlie Fenton or one of the other Mac gurus to have a look at your problem.

I already thought it was crowded in my head, but now I know... you're thinking my thoughts. Go away. Let me think for myself. Already emailed Charlie. ;-)

No, he didn't. I am asking him again.

In the mean time, can you leave details about your setup and BOINC version, please? Also about what you tried already to remedy this problem.

Sorry, I should have done that initially.
I'm running version 6.2.18 on Mac OSX 10.5.5 with the projects SETI@home and World Community Grid, but with WCG suspended. Every time I login, there is a prompt to whitelist the BOINC executable(in which I choose "Allow").

I just restarted BOINC, and then checked the log file, "LOG FILES>/var/log>appfirewall.log" from Console Viewer, and it read like this:
Oct  4 16:06:22 Macintosh Firewall[40]: boinc is listening from 0.0.0.0:31416 uid = 30 proto=6

Does this mean BOINC can't get the right IP address? Just a thought..

Since updating to Windows 6.2.19 i've been unable to download new work:
"BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration."

Upload is no problem (but now i've run out of anything to upload)

It seems related to protected install since i was able to run 6.2.18 in compatibility mode but changed that when upgrading to 6.2.19

I used to run boinc as a service using local system account as logon in 5.x

HELP!
