and still not seeing anything in the change log for 6.2.16 to tell that it was fixed.

Howdy Folks,

I believe I have found and fixed the keyboard and mouse activity detection issue. Since it is a relatively small change over .15 we are thinking of going straight to a public release with it.

For those who have the time over the next few hours, could you give it a go? Make sure keyboard and mouse activity detection still works in your usage scenario as well as most anything else you do.

Thanks in advance.

Change Log:

- CLIENT/MGR/TRAY: When installed on Vista and UAC is turned on the user by default cannot create globally shared objects. This becomes a problem when protected application mode is turned off for keyboard and mouse detection. Basically all of the components would start up and fail to create the shared memory segment and report the error through stderr which most people don't look at by default.

The client is now the only component that is allowed to create the shared memory segment, if creating the global segment fails it'll create a local one instead. Both the tray and manager now just attach to the existing segment, first trying the global one then the local one.

BOINCmgr not starting up BOINC.exe because the service line is not being created in unprotected install has little affinity with keyboard/mouse activity sensing me thinketh, Jord.

Apparently it all held together with the shared memory segment.

You do know that the local preferences only override those options that are also on the web site? meaning that something that isn't in the local preferences, but is on the web site will be used as normal.

No, adding it to the global_prefs_override.xml file will not work. The override preferences do not know about this preference. It is only found in the global_prefs

And therefore, if you set it through the web site, it won't be overridden by the local preferences.

There was a plan to add all the web-site preferences to the local preferences, but I don't know if that plan died a silent death. Email David about it if you want to know.

You set the preference through one of the web-sites as well? Or did you make sure it wasn't set anywhere?

For I can add things to the global_prefs_override.xml file as well. I just did.
I added <bongo_jerry>1</bongo_jerry> and did a read local prefs from the menu. It didn't care that there's a tag in the file that it doesn't know about.

...
Whether the client ignores <mungo_jerry> tags is in so far relevant that it is a sign of absent feedback to the user.... s/he could have made a typo and pulling hair over why something is not working. At least when adding false tags to the cc_config.xml gives a notice.... consistent?

I thought that would be covered by the <unparsed_xml> clause in said cc_config.xml, but gladly I tested it, before saving this post and saw that even with <unparsed_xml>1</unparsed_xml>, "<mungo_jerry>" isn't reported as error. Very strange...

Gruß,
Gundolf

<Mungo_Jerry> has hands free.

Since there may be copyright resting on this name, I never used it for testing. It's <bongo_jerry> ;-)

Comes out, the 6.2.16 install on XP does NOT install boinctray.exe either

perhaps not on your system, but it sure did on mine. Version is 6.2.16.0

- Is Boinctray really needed on XP systems?

If you want to use the "run only when idle" option, yes.
If you want to use "run when I didn't touch my HID" option, yes.
Else, no.

- Why is BOINCtray not being unpacked on either XP or Vista system?

As said, on your system perhaps not. Permission problem? Original file being read-only?

The rest is for the devs to answer. ;-)

So, unpacking 6.2.16 with /a does expand a copy of boinctray.exe with a correct version number, but manually put into the install directory does nothing even if manually started. A "Daemon Start Failed" and if I were so kind to start the service is the response when launching BOINCmgr.exe
...

That might be the problem. When trying to check the version number, I had to do a search and only found it in C:\Windows, along with boinc.dll and boinc.scr (they actually all say 5.10.45.0 :-)!

Gundolf

I notice from that image that the BOINC copyright expired in 2007.

The Vista story was incomplete and again the issues are not being acknowledged.

See [trac]changeset:15856[/trac] and [trac]changeset:15856[/trac] for the fixes. It'll be included in the next version. Thanks for your perseverance. :-)

Just for the records: By chance, I found the following entry in stderrdae.txt (5.10.5)
Unrecognized XML in GLOBAL_PREFS::parse_override: bongo_jerry
Skipping: 1
Skipping: /bongo_jerry

I had forgotten to remove the test pattern after our global_prevs bout :-)
