BOINC Manager is not currently connected to a BOINC client.
Please use the 'Advanced\Select Computer...' menu option to connect up to a BOINC client.
To connect up to your local computer please use 'localhost' as the host name.

I've been trying to hook up to BAM! all day but can't seem to get past this. I never needed it for Windows XP so for Ubuntu what might I be doing wrong?

Make sure you start the boincmgr from the same directory as where boinc is running from.
Make sure you have allowed both boinc and boinmgr through your firewall.
