Greetings!

Well, I finally had to start using Vista, as they weren’t selling any new laptops with XP on it anymore. One of the first things I did was install BOINC (BTW anyone know why I can’t re-join SETI@Home?).

When I reboot, BOINC doesn’t run automatically anymore... it’s listed as a “Blocked Startup Program” and I need to manually run it, and enter the freaking admin password to make it work.

I had heard that BOINC had some problems with Vista if you didn’t install it in C:\Boinc, which is what I did; but obviously I’m still having a problem... are there any suggestions for this (aside from “Don’t use Vista”... trust me, this isn’t by choice!). Vista’s been out for what, a year and a half now? I would have thought any compatibility errors would have been worked out long ago...

Thanks!

Seti has database problems. They're only partially up, trying to fix these problems. Keep an eye on their news.

You said that "When I reboot, BOINC doesn’t run automatically anymore" you can modify config.xml in Project directory, replace the options disabled value from 1 to 0.
Have a try.It may help.

He's running the client, not the server version of BOINC. So he has no config.xml file anywhere.

Windows Defender is in fact doing the blocking and BOINC version 6 has the fixes for it. Alternate, re-install as a Service and place the installation outside the C:\Program Files\.. structure e.g. C:\BOINC\ or D:\BOINC\. That will allow the launch of the core client even before signing in. Use the Services.msc to change the BOINC service line (right click, properties) startup box form automatic to automatic (start with delay) for improved boot up experience.

ciao

Well, I saw version 6, but it warns against using it except for testing...

As for "service"... errr... is there anything anywhere that explains what that is and how to do it?

The service install of a program means that it runs automatically, even before you log on to Windows.

For a How to install as a service, look here. That FAQ will take you step by step through the install process.

Disabling the system security is not a solution.

There are three ways to make BOINC work.

1) (Best) Install 6.2.18.
2) (Second Best) Install 5.x as a service.
3) (Worst) Disable UAC (it is possible to do for a single application - at least I think I read a doc on how to do that.)
