My computer's drive is very small, I have an external drive connected by firewire with lots more room. Is there a way to have Boinc use that for processing?

In BOINC version 6, perhaps. But it's still being tested.
For now though, EVERYTHING must be in the same folder (and sub-folders).
So, install BOINC in the external drive, and run it and the projects from there.

As said, BOINC 6 will separate the BOINC directory and the Data directory by default. It's even impossible to put them in the same place as the installer won't let you.

You can do something similar with BOINC 5.10.45 though: How to set up BOINC with a separate Data directory?

(Looks like duplication of effort)

Nice to see you back from vacation, Rob, but it has slowed you down a bit. Need more sun? :-)
