For some time I haven't received any units for Predictor@Home, so I decided to detach from that project. However the Detach button is greyed out, no matter what I do. I have suspended it, and set it to "get no new tasks"; but I would like to remove it altogether. It clutters up the display, and after all I am no longer associated with it. When I go to the Predictor@Home web site, I find no way of detaching under my account information page. Can anyone help?

Is it possible you used an account manager to attach to Predictor?

Yes! I am using BOINC Manager, but before that there was some other manager whose name I don't recall right now.

If it was BAM, you need to go to their web site, then follow their FAQ.

Probably BOINC Account Manager which you find at BOINCstats. The only other I know, which may not have Predictor in it's selection is Grid Republic.

Actually the client software I am using is called simply BOINC Manager. Previously, I did use Grid Republic, but I dropped that some time ago as it did not seem to update the version of BOINC I was running.

Sorry to be so vague, but I am just a guy who has several computers and wants to donate my spare cycles to good causes. I find it difficult to keep up with the string of different programs that have come and gone - first SETIatHome, then a number of little utilities that worked with that, then BOINC, then GridRepublic, and now BOINC Manager - which I guess may not be anything other than just the BOINC client itself.

So in answer to the original question: I may well have attached to Predictor@Home with Grid Republic, a year or more ago. Recently I found that Predictor@Home was not running or getting any work, and the Web site seemed to have no one at home either. So I want out.

Predictor did move to another university and as such to another web site. They're presently holding up at http://predictor.chem.lsa.umich.edu/, but have not much work.

Now when you changed from Grid Republic to BOINC, did you detach through their site from the projects, then uninstall Grid Republic completely, before installing the newer BOINC version and attach to your projects?

If not, there's a good chance your client_state.xml file still points to you using the account manager. BOINC Manager is simply the graphical user interface that gives you an easier way to command BOINC around.

Please go to Grid Republic, log in and see if you need to detach there first.
Also check in BOINC Manager->Advanced View, (and here it gets fuzzy for me as I don't use an AMS, so I have to guess) either the Tools menu or the Advanced menu, see if there's a sync to account manager option.

Actually, what is needed on the client side is only BOINC, which consists of BOINC Core Client, BOINC Manager and the respective science application(s) (SETI, Einstein, etc.). Then there are additional tools called account manager, like BAM! (Boinc Account Manager) and GridRepublic.

So, if you have attached to Predictor with GridRepublic, you must detach using it also. If you don't want to use GridRepublic as account manager any longer, use the Advanced menu in BOINC Manager (advanced view): There should be an item similar to "Stop using GridRepublic..." (for me it reads "Stop using BOINCstats BAM!..."). After that, the Detach button should no longer be disabled.

Gruß,
Gundolf

I may have been faster, but I didn't know of this option, so thanks for teaching me. :-)

Thanks, Gundolf and Jord...

I used the link to Grid Republic, where I found to my surprise that I still have an account. Sure enough, Predictor@Home was listed among my projects. So I removed it, logged out, and logged back in... it was gone.

But I still see Predictor@Home in my list of Projects in BOINC Manager! And I have no option anywhere to detach from Grid Republic. I think what happened was that I uninstalled the Grid Republic software (forgetting to delete my account with its server) and downloaded the latest version of BOINC. So I have been running BOINC, which has no way of knowing about my Grid Republic account.

Logically, I suppose I should "introduce" BOINC to Grid Republic by attaching to it as an account manager, and then I can detach from it?

Who knew a simple background screensaver could get so "interesting"?? 8-)

I just did that - no effect at all!

OK, then let's do it by hand.

Exit BOINC completely.
Navigate to your BOINC directory. (Default at c:\program files\boinc)
Edit client_state.xml with Notepad.
Use Edit->Find->Type in Predictor, click Search. Exit search (not needed anymore).

The search put you at the first possible mention of Predictor that it could.
Now go up one line to the <project> tag. Make sure you start at the line start.
While holding down Shift, scroll down to the last </project_files> you see. (There's a next <project> tag for the next project, stop before that.)

You've selected all of Predictor, press Delete on the keyboard.
Now Save client_state.xml through the File->Save dialog. Don't use Save As...
Exit Notepad.

Back in the BOINC directory, find the account_predictor.chem.lsa.umich.edu.xml file and delete it. If your link still points to the old Predictor site (which is possible), it's account_predictor.scripps.edu.xml (or something similar).

Now restart BOINC.
If all is well, all mention of Predictor should be gone.

(edited for less now...)

Thanks for your detailed directions, Jord. As it turns out, I don't need to carry them out, as attaching to Grid Republic and then detaching from it did work. It just took a few hours. I have now kissed goodbye to Predictor@Home, and my Statistics display looks a lot better with just four projects on it - all of them up to date.

I'd really like to thank Jord, Gundolf, and anyone who offered advice without giving their name. You gave me good advice, you were very patient, and you kept on helping me until my problem was solved. I wish most professional support people were half as good!
